Text-to-Speech Synthesis provides a complete, end-to-end account of the process of generating speech by computer. Giving an in-depth explanation of all aspects of current speech synthesis technology, it assumes no specialized prior knowledge. Introductory chapters on linguistics, phonetics, signal processing and speech signals lay the foundation, with subsequent material explaining how this knowledge is put to use in building practical systems that generate speech. Including coverage of the very latest techniques such as unit selection, hidden Markov model synthesis, and statistical text analysis, explanations of the more traditional techniques such as format synthesis and synthesis by rule are also provided. Weaving together the various strands of this multidisciplinary field, the book is designed for graduate students in electrical engineering, computer science, and linguistics. It is also an ideal reference for practitioners in the fields of human communication interaction and telephony.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"According to Taylor, "In written language the author may take the liberty of explaining something in a complicated fashion knowing that the reader can go back and read this several times" However, this is not true in the case of his book. Taylor so clearly presents the concepts, that re-reading is unnecessary."

5.0 out of 5 stars everything you need to know about speech synthesis, September 22, 2009
By
Bill Byrne (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Text-to-Speech Synthesis (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent introduction to all aspects of speech synthesis. It tells you everything you need to know, with ample discussion as to why you need to know it. There's also plenty of material suitable for readers already familiar with the subject who are interested in more advanced discussions. The discussion of HMM-based synthesis is a good example of this - the text is a good accompaniment to the current literature. There's also a very good introduction to speech signal processing, particularly for students with a good math background but who haven't yet studied DSP.

This book is one of the core texts for the Cambridge MPhil in Computer Speech, Text and Internet Technology. By all accounts, students have found the material very helpful and interesting. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough and easy to understand., June 10, 2011
This review is from: Text-to-Speech Synthesis (Hardcover)
This was my first book on TTS, and I couldn't be happier with it. It makes me want to study the field further, in that it was presented in a way that was easy to understand for someone with little or no previous knowledge about TTS. I would highly recommend it.
