Book Description

0470281731 978-0470281734 January 19, 2010 7
This book presents a clear and precise discussion of the biochemistry of eukaryotic cells, particularly those of mammalian tissues, relates biochemical events at a cellular level to the subsequent physiological processes in the whole animal, and cites examples of abnormal biochemical processes in human disease. The organization and content are tied together to provide students with the complete picture of biochemistry and how it relates to human diseases.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a very readable text...ideal for medicine or clinical biochemistry undergraduate students...has much to offer to medicinal chemistry students..." (Chemistry World, April 2004)

"Outstanding…classic...clear illustrations abound...an exceedingly thorough, accurate, and up-to-date volume." (The Quarterly Review of Biology)

"A delightful book to read…I would recommend this book highly...for any who seek to understand the biochemical basis of disease..." (Annals of Clinical Biochemistry)

"…I believe this text fills an important niche, and in that niche it is very well done…a very useful text for those going into medicine.” (Biochemistry and Molecular Education, July-August 2002)

"...a comprehensive biochemistry book...new material in key areas justifies the new edition..." (Doody's Health, April 19, 2002)

"There are numerous good textbooks available for general biochemistry, but medical, pharmacy, and other health professional students often question the relevance of the extensive coverage given to...simpler organisms...Devlin's textbook fills the needs of these students, with its strong emphasis on human biochemistry...an excellent choice for a pharmaceutical or medical biochemistry course." (Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Vol. 45, No. 11)

"...This is a welcome and relatively inexpensive volume for students of biochemistry and especially those involved with clinical biochemistry".(Cell Biochemistry & Function, June 2003) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

Unique in its inclusion of clinical correlations, it is an invaluable reference for medical, dentistry and veterinary students, providing exhaustive coverage of proteins, enzymes, metabolism, DNA, RNA, hormones, and more. New to this edition are chapters covering protein function, protein synthesis, genetic engineering and molecular cell biology. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fine integrative text, May 9, 2006
By
The Duke (Indianapolis, IN USA) - See all my reviews
We used this book teaching first year medical school biochemistry. The clinical correlations are well done, but the real strengh of the book lies in the sections on metabolic interrelationships. It is often confusing to the medical student to learn a pathway, and the the metabolic controls of the pathway, and then the added complexity that this system works differently in different tissues. This physiological complexity (which is the layer of integration where diagnosis really happens) is tackled head on in the first few chapters. This helps keep the student oriented to the system (the patient) and not get totally lost in the trees of enzyme names and co-factors.

I wish this book had been around when I went through medical school.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take a chance to be fascinated by biochemistry, July 15, 1999
I am 4° semester medical student and ever since I was introduced to this book (about a year ago by my biochemistry class teacher), it has proved to be a very useful biochemistry information resource. I have other biochemistry texts because I like to study from different points of view, but this text is a little bit different from the basic biochemistry textbook in that the information presented here is most relevant to the clinical setting. After reading any chapter it will be clear to you that you made a good investment. The most important thing is that the book is written in a very understandable reading wiht many examples and illustrations. The chapter on metabolic interrelationships will proof of great value to understanding biochemistry as a fundamental discipline in medicine; in a sense it opened my eyes (and yours too) to what at first seems a boring subject.

If you are thinking that because the book is presented in a clinical way you'll loose basic information, don't be. I took the chance and believe me I am not dissapointed at all, otherwise I wouldn't be recommending it to you. Good luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars ANALYTICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE, March 19, 2003
By
reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This is a very comprehensive biochemistry textbook: well-written and well-organized. It maintained both analytical and interpretative approach in most of its chapters. Its clinical applications were evident in the way it handled nucleic acids, nucleotides, bioenergetics, immunochemistry, enzymology, and gene replications. Each metabolic pathway it discussed is well-detailed, and is supported with illustrative charts.
The only thing this book demands from its reader is good Organic Chemistry foundation. It is a very good text, although that its retail price is clearly on the high side.
