Book Description

1416055592 978-1416055594 July 16, 2009 4
The fourth edition of Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography presents an accessible primer on this complex topic from Dr. Catherine Otto, one of the foremost teachers and writers in the field. You'll find straightforward explanations of the basics of ultrasound physics, image acquisition, and all the major techniques and major disease categories, as well as the latest on advanced echo techniques-such as contrast echo, 3D echo, and myocardial mechanics (strain rate imaging, speckle tracking, and synchrony). Each chapter-including a new one on intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography-features a practical outline called The Echo Exam, ideal for understanding the use of echo and its outcomes. State-of-the-art echo images are complemented by full-color comparative drawings of heart structures. And now, you can access the full text online thanks to Expert Consult functionality.
  • Covers all main diseases, including adult congenital heart disease, with a problem-based approach to echocardiography.
  • Reviews basic principles for evaluation, the echocardiographic approach, differential diagnosis, limitations, and technical considerations for each disease, as well as alternate diagnostic approaches.
  • Enables you to perform procedures correctly and recognize inadequate data with coverage of technical details for data acquisition and limitations of each echocardiographic approach.
  • Emphasizes alternative diagnostic approaches to help you solve clinical problems when echocardiography does not provide a definitive answer.
  • Includes The Echo Exam (a brief summary of how to do it, the necessary calculations, diagnosis and examples) as an appendix for review and reinforcement.
  • Features a new chapter dedicated to intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, cross-referenced with other chapters, for coverage of this important and difficult technique.
  • Covers myocardial mechanics-strain rate imagine, speckle tracking, and synchrony-in the advanced modalities, in addition to contrast and 3D echo.
  • Integrates TTE and TEE images more explicitly into each chapter to discuss the two techniques in parallel and give you clear explanations of the pros, cons, and the role of each modality in patient evaluation.
  • Includes new digital images throughout-with more TEE, more echocardiograms, and color diagrams-so you can easily identify cardiac problems.
  • Presents the latest ASE recommendations for chamber quantification, including updated tables of normal measurements, for convenient reference.
  • Provides online access to the full text of the book through Expert Consult functionality.

More About the Author

Catherine Otto is the J. Ward Kennedy-Hamilton Endowed Chair in Cardiology, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Training Programs at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Otto is recognized as an expert on calcific aortic valve disease. Dr. Otto's research has transformed our understanding of this disease process, showing that it is an active disease process that may be amenable to medical therapy, rather than being an inevitable consequence of aging. Her research on the aortic valve includes validation of noninvasive measures of disease severity, the first prospective study of disease progression, immunohistologic studies establishing the cellular and molecular mechanisms of valve disease, epidemiologic studies defining the clinical risk factors associated with calcific valve disease and a landmark study demonstrating that even mild valve thickening, called aortic sclerosis, is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

In addition, Dr. Otto is the author of several cardiology books: The Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography (4th Edition), The Practice of Clinical Echocardiography (3rd Edition), Valvular Heart Disease (3rd Edition, co-edited by Robert O. Bonow, MD), Atlas of Intraoperative Echocardiography (with Don Oxorn) and the Echocardiography Review Guide ( 2nd Edition with Rosario Freeman and Becky Schwaegler). She also is a Cardiology Editor-in-Chief for the online medical textbook Up-to-Date.

4.0 out of 5 stars useful but waiting for the new edition, July 9, 2000
By A Customer
I found this book is useful for all the cardiology trainee as it is well written, easy to understood and there is many figures. However, it did not mention the new technology in the field of echocardiography such as the tissue doppler, contrast echo. I hope the next edition will include this and the illustrations will be more colorful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful extra book., January 3, 2007

It is always OK to use more than one book for study of a subject but for ECHO Feigenbaums is the bible. The 6th edition is a great book and DVD-ROM. Recommended for all levels of echocardiologists.

Ottos book is a helpful extra book. If you want to stick to one book get Feigenbaum's.

Well written and easy to understand. Many TTE references are less useful to a beginner in TEE without much TTE experience.
