Book Description

0920905129 978-0920905128 June 1, 1987
This book is a masterpiece and is considered the classic of classics for the rowing world. In designing the content of the book Bourne seemed to harmonise the text with the execution of a single stroke cycle - simplicity is paramount. The main parts identify and represent the key component of rowing, i.e., the Theory of Rowing, the Art of Rowing, Oars and Boats, On Coaching, and On Muscular Action in Rowing. The careful layout of Bourne's master plan subtly recognises the scientific undergirding of the sport, the ballet or ideal movement patterns of the sport, the mechanics and tools used by the athlete, the importance of a skilled mentor, and the recognition of the internal mechanics of the athlete's body. This book is an excellent companion reading to current sport and rowing literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete and Comprehensive Guide, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Textbook of Oarsmanship : A Classic of Rowing Technical Literature (Paperback)
This elegantly composed book is a masterpiece of rowing self-instruction. It helps all from the novice to the advanced rower to gain a more complete understanding of the dynamics of the stroke and the mental preparation that underlies any successful bid for victory. The section On Coaching was particularly enlightening. Overall, a very good read, especially considering some of the more techincal aspects of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't trust ISBN Searchs, August 18, 2011
This review is from: Textbook of Oarsmanship : A Classic of Rowing Technical Literature (Paperback)
JUST A WARNING TO BUYERS that this book shares an ISBN with: KINESIOLOGY STUDENT WORKBOOK 2nd ed.(copyright: 2011). The ISBN is of course supposed to be UNIQUE to each book, but this is not always the case. ISBN's are NOT a highly reliable way to identify used books. When you are buying from mega-sellers, understand that they DON'T LOOK AT THE BOOK, they scan the ISBN barcode and let the computer do the rest. Welcome to 21st century "efficiency"! G.I.,G.O. Good luck.

3.0 out of 5 stars THEORY OF ROWING FROM 1885-1960, May 15, 2007

This review is from: Textbook of Oarsmanship : A Classic of Rowing Technical Literature (Paperback)
Generally I disliked this book, however, I did get some value out of the last chapter "Muscle Action In Rowing". Not suited for novice-intermediate rowers looking for rowing self-instruction. The technical material from research & rowing performed in the early 1900's seemed more appropriate for advanced rowers or coaches who might be interested in the scientific principles.
