Editorial Reviews

Review

"…a useful textbook for upper-level undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellows in pharmacy, medical, and public health programs." (The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, June 2007)

"This is a major text with far-reaching impact…recommended for all courses in public health or pharmacology…" (Electric Review, March/April 2007)

From the Back Cover

In recent years the public has clearly become markedly more interested in assuring the safety and effectiveness of its medicines. It is also critical that available medicines are used optimally, by both health care practitioners and patients. We need to know the extent to which an intervention does what it is really intended to do, under routine circumstances rather than ideal conditions, for those who receive it. Appropriate and valid pharmacoepidemiology methods are central to evaluating the safety and effectiveness of medicines and their use. This textbook is the abridged version of Brian Strom's Pharmacoepidemiology Fourth Edition, and presents the essential material for such evaluations.

It provides methods, details of potential data sources, and information about evaluating the results and drawing conclusions. The layout and easy to read style will provide an accessible introduction to pharmacoepidemiology as well as a reference source for academics, public health practitioners, regulatory agencies, the pharmaceutical industry and the law.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Alan M. Hochberg on July 3, 2007
Format: Paperback
This book takes an enormous amount of information that has heretofore been scattered in various journal articles and other sources, and gathers it into one convenient, coherent, well-indexed place. It covers both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the complex, multidisciplinary field that is drug safety epidemiology today. A great reference to have when conducting or evaluating studies.

Format: Paperback
As an epidemiologist and a physician working in the area of drug safety and pharmacovigilance, I find this book a great source to bridge all theoretical and practical gaps in this field. Key features include comprehensiveness and useful case studies. It would help if the publisher improved font size, print and paper quality.

Format: Hardcover
it's an excellent book with a very logical sequence to learn the field of pharmacoepidemiology, although the letter is small what makes difficult a little the reading

This is a good introductory text. It helps to have an epidemiology background, but it is pretty straightforward. Some of the topics probably are handled better in the updated version of the text that came out this past year.
