5.0 out of 5 stars Textiles and Clothing (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London), October 6, 2008
This review is from: Textiles and Clothing, c.1150-1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) (Paperback)
Another book from the series Medieval Finds from Excavations in London and (as far as I can tell) equally thorough and reliable. A treasure trove of information for professional historians and serious non-professionals alike, this book not only lists and describes what was found, but also gives background information on weaving and sewing techniques and probable usage of the items. With rather more text and less enumeration than 'Dress accessories' this book is a little easier to read. Again the numerous pictures and drawings clarify and enliven the text for those who are not familiar with weaving and sewing. (Actually, some basic knowledge of both those crafts is needed at times.)

Wonderful book for the serious student of medieval and early Renaissance costuming. Full of photos and in-depth exploration of primary sources and excellent scholarship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful resource with good pictures, January 19, 2009
This review is from: Textiles and Clothing, c.1150-1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) (Paperback)
There are increasing numbers, now, of books that describe archaeological finds that provide clues to the material culture of a former age. "Textiles and Clothing" is written in the dry technical style of most such books, but features more, and better, pictures of key finds than many such books do. For the costumer with a bit of archaeological knowledge, this book is immensely useful--but it's not an easy or fun read.

For lovers of historical clothing in this time period, this is a must have :) I've pored over this work many happy hours and have used some of the information for my own creations. The data on the finds themselves is also very interesting.

I bought this book to use for documentation and study in recreating clothing of the Middle Ages. I was not disappointed at all--excellent information and photos!

I haven't had a chance to sit down and properly read the book cover to cover. From glancing through, and the reactions of fellow Society for Creative Anachronism (Medieval) recreationists who looked through it, this would seem to be a wonderful reference for those A&S projects where documentation is required and a time machine is optimal. It gives the provenance of all the items and reconstructs them for you. (Sometimes I wonder how they got so much information out of a soggy scrap.)

I weave and am looking forward to being able to reconstruct some things from the book, and the other books on accessories and shoes are on my wish list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for the serious costumer of this time period, October 12, 2011
This review is from: Textiles and Clothing, c.1150-1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) (Paperback)
Concise and non-emmbellished info on archeological findings with regards to textiles and clothing. Don't think you know jack until you have read this book. People were giving me so much hearsay and conflicting info. I finally read this book and now I know what's true and what's not. Example: someone was trying to tell me there were no knitted garments. Well, there is an example of a knitted peice and what it was dyed with, etc, in this book. Very informative. I now have the most accurate, well-made costumes of anyone I know. Improved my sewing techniques hugely as I strive to imitate that which was done all by hand of course as much I can on machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating for costume geeks, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Textiles and Clothing, c.1150-1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in authentic medieval costume. If you wanted to know the most common kind of braid found in medieval London archeological sites, and whether the fibers were S-spun or Z-spun, this is for you (8 strand braid was the most common). Like the other Museum of London series books, it's full of detail. It's invaluable in recreating accurate medieval costume details, if that's your interest. If you can be happy with a Halloween party "Maid Marion" dress made from a commercial pattern, this is not for you.
