4.0 out of 5 stars The spongetones show their style August 9, 2001
Format:Audio CD
The Spongetones can be criticized as being a Beatles sound alike band. True, the concerts they've had are monuments to the Beatles music. And, true, they do play the power pop that other groups such as Badfinger and the Raspberry's played in their hey day.
This Band is much more than that, however. In terms of enjoyment, they are a wonderful 60 minutes (more or less) of joy. But, rather than taking the Beatles style and aping it, they have taken the Beatles style and have molded it into something that is more of their own.
Songs like "Skinny" and "Rattle My Chain" clearly fall into the Power Pop catagory that I grew up with and still enjoy. But, where do you place "Spirit World"? This band had (has?) the potential of becoming more than a passing thing... let's hope they continue to progress and grow.
If you're into power pop, and want to expand your horizons and explore the possiblities pop this CD into your player, put on your headphones and drift away...

4.0 out of 5 stars SMOOTH DRONE TEXTURAL THING July 26, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These guys, in my humble opinion, make great records. This 1995 disc is smooth and a ways down the road from the Beat and Torn days. They've progressed beyond most of that phase though, of course, that's a lot of who they were/are. These songs have more bite--Rattle My Chain, for instance. Little Death is an example of the smooth--nice melody, keys solo, guitar solo, harmonies--jazzy almost. Acoustic guitar and voice begin Just Another Dream with a folky touch. Several of these tunes are worthy of the Searchers or even the Records--two of the tightest power pop groups. These guys are almost there in that crowd. Not bad. Awesome guitar in Patrick Walters' Try To Please. Skinny is a piece of perfection: "She knows she runs my game...." Tuneful twists and turns everywhere. The SpongeTones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Sponged August 23, 2000
By Ann W.
Format:Audio CD
This album has everything--great music, clever lyrics--what more could a fan want? I'm especially fond of "Skinny" but "Try To Please" and "L'Amour/Le Guerre" are also especially memorable songs. This one's a must if you're already a Spongetones fan but it's also a good intro to the band since it showcases what they do best!
