Editorial Reviews

Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer and legendary bassist Bootsy Collins, known worldwide for pioneering funk music with James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic, will release his first new album in four years, 'Tha Funk Capitol of the World,' April 26 on Mascot Records. Collins collaborated with fellow P-Funkers George Clinton and Bernie Warrell on the record, along with an all-star lineup of musicians and cultural luminaries including rappers Snoop Dogg, Chuck D, and Ice Cube; actor Samuel L. Jackson; banjo phenom Bela Fleck; the Rev. Al Sharpton; scholar Dr. Cornell West; and guitarists Buckethead and Catfish Collins - Bootsy's late brother. Engineered in part by Dan Monti (Guns n Roses, Metallica), the album also features a tribute to Garry Shider, the late guitarist and musical director of the P-Funk All-Stars.

And who says learning can't be fun??? What a great CD!!! Bootsy and Co navigate the very funked up waters of the world and travel to the land of legends, philosophy, music, history and inner peace! BC throws down one hell of a world vision with funk, fun and knowledge as the stars of the show. This is a right n' tight masterwork from one of the cornerstones of Pfunk central! Kids...Google EVERYBODY on this CD and learn somethin'!!!

I normally only download the tracks that I like from cd's. After I previewed tracks 1,2,4,5,6,8,9 I said "funk" it! I gotta' have the whole cd!!! My homie Bootsy Collins may have just finished his best project ever! Out of 17 tracks....for me this one is about 14 maybe 15 deep. This is refreshing! This is the real. This is the "P" funk....uncut funk...the "bomb", y'all!" Wind the homie up! 'Cause Bootsy has put the game on "sizzle" again! It's gon' be party 4 days!

Bootsy shows that the Funk never left. I could go on for ever, but short and sweet. Not a bad cut on this cd. Old school funk, new rap funk, acid rock funk, you name it they are all here, (and other forms). Get this cd or down load NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you Love Bootsy, then you will love his new CD release... As always with Bootsy, some things you have to catch on to and then that becomes your favorite track too :) I'm in Love with #9 don't take my Funk away (yes!). #2 with Ice Cube, KRS1, and Snoop is good but couldn've been great if Snoop didn't get lazy and use the same rap from Bootsy's Christmas CD on this track.. Hey Snoop, what up - did you think a Bootsy fan didn't buy the christmas CD to know you didn't spin nothing new on the Funk Capitol CD. Also, wish he had split some of his guests and not have them all on track 2... BTW, the Christmas CD was off the chain!! Loved it! Thanks Bootsy, because now I don't have to listen to the same ole dry Christmas songs. I love that Bootsy is still keeping it Real and Funky!! If you love Bootsy, then you will love Funk Capitol.

If there was ever an example of a success in the funk music relm it would have to be Bootsy Collins. He was there during the infancy of the genre with James Brown and than onto George Clinton. He even survived some of funk's more challenging periods by collaborating with other artists and doing more session work. And most importantly,he managed to come out of the addiction problems faced by many in the music world period to come out all the better. Now he is emerging as something of an elder statesman of the genre. And he has had enough experiences at this point to create what could be described as a magnum opus. And he also possesses the singular talent, versatility and personality to pull it off. On the other hand he's also one of the chief architects of P-funk which, even during it's original era was a lot more fragile than it seemed to be. So this album comes off as perhaps being a grand finale to an amazing career.

What's good and not so good about it comes from it's ambition. Bootsy is looking here to do a sort of P-Funk equivalent to Quincy Jones' Back on the Block, pulling together elements from different generations-musical and culturally to show a generation cycle involved. But here there are some cracks in the jib that are just difficult to avoid. P-funk after the 90's was always dependent on guest artists, especially hip-hop related. But this one is a bit too reliant on the worn out formula. Every song here has a guest. And often times their presence, considering some of them are relative unknowns, reduce Bootsy to being a sideman on his own recording. Samuel L Jackson rapping about the influence music played in his life on "After These Messages" is a meaningful and happy surprise.

This CD is amazingly good. The musicianship is top-notch, and the lyrics are as deep and witty as anything ever done by the Parliament/Funkadelic. Not one bad cut on this CD. It sounds suprisingly up-to-date without loosing it's soul. All the guest artists fit into the P-Funk world without sounding corny; the Bela Fleck collaboration is great! Who would have thought that Salsa and P-Funk would work so well together? Or even Country and P-Funk (Stars have no Name)? All the genres work well, and it's a testimony to Booty's excellent musicianship and vision. I love it!

This is a two-fold review. First it is a comment on an earlier post where the writer was left wanting for good old time Bootsy P-Funk and less commentary . Second it's my opinion on the album. My comment on the earlier post was:

"I, too, love Bootsy. Saying that, I have to disagree with your viewpoint. This isn't really about the "good ole Booty funk". This is a work of P-funkness that intertwines time, space, mind set, cultural mores and more in a way that inserts true P-Funk into an incredible array of musical styles. Al Sharpton (and I am definitely not a fan), lends an unusual, but entertaining, insight into the true roots of all subsequent African American music since JB showed Bootsy how all that was important was gettin' it on the ONE! Every beat conscious style since then has used the ONE. And Bootsy, on this disc, gives us all an earhole full of knowledge, wisdom, raw emotion and sticky chocolate goodness that's ALL "on the ONE"!"

I stand by that comment and use it to accomplish my second purpose; my album review. I find it impossible to stop listening to this disc. I marvel at the love and craftsmanship Bootsy put into this work. He is indeed the "Funk Teacher". Still putting out incredible, original and genre bending sounds that will reach your rump AND your heart. He is single handedly moving the true spirit of "the P-Funk, the uncut Funk, the BOMB" into the 21st century. And God knows, we can sure use it! And so, once again, I am left in awe of William Earl Collins' grasp of how to make the world a better, happier, more open-minded and of course funkier place to reside. We have no choice, So flip it on and enjoy the ride. The world is a definitely better place when you just HAVE to "get up offa that thing and shake 'til you feel better"!
