4.0 out of 5 stars Bronx rap makes a comeback, April 11, 2006
This review is from: Tha Movement (Audio CD)
Not since the days of Fat Joe and the Terror Squad has there been a concerted effort to rejuvenate and resuscitate the Bronx's role in contemporary rap music. Granted, the untimely passing of Big Pun was a significant setback, as was the eventual separation of Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz, whose "De Ja Vu (Uptown Baby)" hit single was also touted as a sign of the Bronx's return.

G-Rod's attempt to introduce new, fresh talent from Hip Hop's birthplace is successful. The energy of these new artists evokes a hunger that has long-since made the Bronx infamous; the production quality is both innovative and original.

Where the album falls short is in its content. While these artists are free to express their emotions in whatever way suits them, the lister will not get a sense of the Bronx from the selected tracks. This could make the album appear more universal; however, the "Bronx-ness" of the album gets lost somewhere after the intro. Instead, it becomes another rap album with hungry novices (who happen to be from the Bronx) ready to take the next step.

Still, if you are interested in what's new in Bronx rap, this album is worth the listen. You might not feel like you're on the famed Bronx streets of Southern Boulevard, Grand Concourse or Fordham Road, but it feels like street music, all the same.
