Book Description

0804705674 978-0804705677 June 1, 1964 1st
This is the first new Thai-English dictionary by an American Scholar to appear in over twenty years. It includes many new words and new uses of old words that have entered the language since Wold War II, an it employs the latest official spellin of words (based on the Thai-Thai Government Dictionary of 1950), with some older spellings cross-referenced to the present spelling. Its 20,000 entries are presented in a sinle alphabetical listing: standard vocabulary items, names of people and organizations, place names, and abbreviatiions.

The pronunciation of words is shown in a scientific writing which includes five tones, stress within rhythm groups, and intonation whenever clauses or sentences are cited. The pronunciation guide is not a translation; rather it is the standard pronunciation used by educated speakers in Bangkok, which often differs from the traditional spelling in tone and vowel length.

Levels of usage—vulgar, common, colloquial, elegant, royal, and sacerdotal—are indicated whenever pertinent. Slang terms and idioms are included, and for words that American students find difficult there are grammatical comments and ample examples of usage.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Both English-speaking students of Thai and Thai students of all disciplines will be hard put to find a more comprehensive and satisfying answer to their general vocabulary needs. Professional translators, researchers, and even specialists whose only concern is problems of transliteration, will all benefit from this remarkable publication. . . . Professor Haas and her assistants have turned out a masterpiece of lexicography in a neglected language—one which far surpasses its nearest competitors.”—Orient/West

“An outstanding achievement. . . . Its accuracy and reliability make it one of the most significant contributions to the study of the Thai language.”—Modern Language Journal

“A monumental work of compilation . . . The Stanford University Press and Dr. Haas deserve the thanks of all English knowing students of Thai language for this great work.”—United Asia

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Thai dictionary out there for non-native Thais, July 30, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Thai-English Student's Dictionary (Hardcover)
In the midst of a plethora of poorly written and poorly documented Thai dictionaries, very few have been written with the serious non-native student of the Thai language. This dictionary fortunately fits the bill, and was my "bible" during a two year stay in Thailand. It shows Thai words both in Thai script and most importantly, in a clear and consistent romanization. Translations are given in plain non-dictionary type English. One the best Thai language references available. One only wishes for two things; More sentence examples, and a updated version which would cover many of the newer additions and changes in the Thai language. The last publication date for this book was listed in 1964. Despite this shortcoming, it has held up amazingly well

4.0 out of 5 stars Still the best dictionary available, April 12, 2000

Jeffrey L. Guthery (Seoul Korea (South)) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Thai-English Student's Dictionary (Hardcover)
Working off and on as translator in Thailand since 1993, this dictionary has been a constant companion and is now literally in pieces from constant use. Though one can find other Eng-Thai dictionaries for sale in Bangkok bookstores, I would submit that this one, even several decades since its last revision, still stands head and shoulders above the rest. The only shortcoming I want to address is that there are almost no example sentences to clarify and give a sharper focus on correct usage. This often caused me to refer to a Eng-Thai dictionary for usage confirmation. Just how time-consuming a task this is had not occurred to me until I began working in Korea, where I noticed how the better Kor-Eng dictionaries list multiple example sentences to cover all possible connotations for each word entry. Therefore, it would be nice to see a revised version complete with example sentences. That being said, it is still the best dictionary of its type (there are some terrible ones out there!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Covers written Thai-to-English only; not English-to-Thai., March 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thai-English Student's Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is an excellent and comprehensive dictionary, but the prospective buyer should be forewarned: it is for written Thai-to-English only. This is great for translating Thai writing. It is useless if you want to know the Thai word for "cockroach" or "loneliness" or any of the many thousand other words that you won't find in a tourist-level dictionary. It also leaves out any means of looking up Thai words by their pronunciation. Fortunately, the book is useful for me since I want to learn to read Thai; however, it leaves me still looking for a top-notch English-to-Thai dictionary.
