Great Book for Serious Learners, July 20, 2006
This review is from: Thai Sound System and Reading Rules (Paperback)
Dr. Jantharat has provided a very systematic method of learning to read and write Thai. There are no interesting stories and it may overwhelm a casual student. I was in the Peace Corps in Thailand and learned how to speak and identify the letters and I butchered the tones. I could function, however, I was basically illiterate.
This book requires alot of serious memorization, if you want to really learn Thai you must do it. I spent about an hour a day and completed the book in two months.
First you learn the consonants, then the classes of consonants, the vowels and finally the tones. There are practice drills for every aspect and Dr. Jantharat guides you gracefully through a pretty tough subject.
In conclusion, I would whole-heartedly endorse the book to anyone wanting to learn Thai. It's not fun and games, but you can buy another book for that. This book cuts to the chase and gets the job done.
Thank you Dr. Jantharat for helping me put the puzzle together.
