I read this book in 2 days. I recommend this book for any Western man who is dating or courting a Thai woman. I was ignorant to many Thai ways. This book is Heaven-sent as it is easy to read and understand and cleared up a lot of misunderstandings I had previously.

For example: Many guys told me that Thai women lie and to get used to it. I had a negative view...

My wife of 7 years was born and raised in Thailand and lived there for most of her life (33 years) until she immigrated to the US around 9 years ago. I am 2nd generation Italian-American, and was for the most part raised in an old fashioned Italian culture. Both my wife and I are professionals. I start my review in this fashion to set the context and view point of my...

5.0 out of 5 stars Get an insider's view, January 27, 2007
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
I read this book in 2 days. I recommend this book for any Western man who is dating or courting a Thai woman. I was ignorant to many Thai ways. This book is Heaven-sent as it is easy to read and understand and cleared up a lot of misunderstandings I had previously.

For example: Many guys told me that Thai women lie and to get used to it. I had a negative view of this. But the truth is that Thai culture is non-confrontational and that it saves face of everyone involved. In order to avoid anyone being embarrassed or degraded, Thai people may at times stretch the truth or speak something other than the blatant truth. This is not meant maliciously, but as a Westerner it may be hard to understand, especially if you are from a culture that prides itself from boldness, bluntness and outspokeness.

Because of my German heritage, I was taught to be blunt and not to beat around the bush. I was taught that this was a sign of respect towards others. I learned that in Thai culture this is a sign of DISREPSECT. It is often to save face and to avoid confrontation in Thailand.

Also the issue with the dowry bride price bothered me until I read this book. I felt uncomfortable with the idea of paying for a woman to marry her. But since reading this book, I realized that Thai culture expects men to pay a dowry as a symbol of love, respect, appreciation and gratitude to the wife's parents for raising and caring for her.

Not every family will require a dowry, so each situation is different.

It is also a sign of readiness to support the future wife. In the West we are taught that love is seperate from money, but in other cultures money may represent a symbol of love. This way of thinking is very different from what I was taught in the West, but it did help me to be more open minded to other ways of thinking. It helped me to understand the deep feelings of Thai culture and to realize that it is not necessarily "gold digging" or "greediness" for a woman to ask for money or material things.

I also understood why a woman may feel depressed, sad, or angry if her boyfriend or husband does not give her material things. On the western point of view it may be seen as "buying" love, but the #1 value of Thai people is generosity. They base their self worth on how generous they are. Therefore, it is hard for them to understand if someone does not want to show generosity.

(Of course balance and communication along with compromise is best in any relationship no matter what cultures are involved. Letting your girlfriend/wife and her family know what you can reasonably afford to help with is almost always going to avoid problems. Letting them know that your heart is true and genuine can often make life a lot easier.)

Although each Thai-Western relationship will differ, I will recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand his Thai girlfriend or wife and where she is coming from.

To my delight, the book is written in both Thai and English, so your
wife or girlfriend and her family can also read this to understand
you better.

Not every single thing in this book will apply to every single relationship, but it does give you something to work from if you are new to this all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Excellent, May 3, 2005

atomic "atomickats" (washington, dc United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
I have been dating Thai women for years (they are the best!!!), and have been in several serious relationships. I thought I knew a lot about our cultural differences, but this book made me realize how much I didn't know or misunderstood. At times I was intrigued and fascinated reading this book, at other times embarrassed at the way my behavior must have appeared to my girlfriends. After reading this book, I gave it to my current Thai girlfriend to read, and she found it equally illuminating about farangs and very accurate about her perceptions and beliefs. An easy read, in both Thai and english. I think it is invaluable if one is to enter into a relationship with a Thai woman. My only disagreement with the book relates to its pessimism towards Thai/Western relationships...even with our misunderstandings, we seem to match up excellently in my opinion, with the understanding gained from this book, its even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Guide to Thai Relationships - Romantic and Otherwise, February 14, 2005
By
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
This book was fun and easy to read - the bi-lingual approach is innovative and useful. Although cross-cultural romantic relationships are the focus of this book, I browsed and bought this book for its application to all relationships between me, a 'farang' (foreigner),and Thai people in every context. I've learned that if one causes offense in Thailand it may be difficult to get a second chance. Getting a good start in Thailand is one great reason to own this book and ensure the famous smiles are heartfelt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for Thai-Western couples!, January 22, 2005
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
You love her smile, you love her spontaneity. She's the best thing that ever happened to you - but what about next month, or next year? This book is a valuable guide to some of the cultural differences that can sink a relationship between a Thai and a "farang". Sure, you'll figure some of these out as you go along, but not without stormy times when you really don't get why mom is so important in her life, or why you always have to do everything in a large, inquisitive group. Read this and you will avoid some anguish, and have a few chuckles along the way. Because the book is bilingual, when the light goes on for you, you can promptly present it to your "fan" and she will get the corresponding insight in Thai. It's like learning to talk word-by-word with the bi-lingual dictionary on the table between you -only this is deeper and more useful stuff that you can communicate in depth when it counts. This book is unique - you can ferret out some of the concepts on the internet or in other books, but this puts it all in one place, and in both languages. Obviously, any book that purports to describe cultural differences will have things to disagree with, but it certainly spots the issues. It will be interesting to see what the Thai side of the house has to say about it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thailand Fever Opened My Eyes, January 19, 2005
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
I just returned from my first trip to Thailand and fell in love with the country and the people. I have a romantic interest there from the trip. After three weeks I had the misconception that our cultures are similar.

Not the case as Thailand Fever points out. This book really helped me understand so much about the culture and expectations in relationships that I didn't know. The fact that it represents both Western and Thai views in both languages so that each person in the relationship can understand the others culture improves the books usefulness even more.

This book really saved my romantic interest and I a lot of headache!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book "broke the code" for me!, February 15, 2005
By
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
Thank you SO MUCH for your book, Thailand Fever!

I have been corresponding with a lovely Thai lady for several months. Next month I will go to Thailand to finally meet her.

Your book has explained so much to me. It's like she has been speaking to me in code. I now see how clear, honest, and direct she has been... BUT FROM HER POINT OF VIEW. It's ME who has been clueless. Thank you for helping me to break the code!

You may have sealed our happy relationship or saved us from a huge mistake... I know not which at this point. But either way at least we will both know WHY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Job, November 4, 2006
By
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
I learned more about Thai culture from this one bok than any other method, and that includes being married to a Thai lady !!!
To most Westernerns, Thai culture is mysterious and confusing, and sometimes not what it might it appear to be on the surface. Thai women are obviously a product to some large degree of that culture.

If any man is thinking about going to Thailand ( or Laos, Cambodia, maybe even the Phillipines) to look for a long term love, I would highly recommend that they read this book first. The dual language ( English on one page and Thai on the other ) approach is genius. The book is not perfect, and things are changing there all the time with onslaught of modernization and technology, but still, I'll never be without at least one copy, I now have two.

Thanks, and "chok dii" ( good luck )

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome book, unfortunate title, January 4, 2007
This review is from: Thailand Fever (Paperback)
This is a great book! Don't be fooled by the gratuitous title and cover art. It's essentially a guide to interracial romance with the emphasis on Thai/Westerner relationships. As a man who dates a Thai woman I have found this book to be a really wonderful guide to making my relationship work.
