This is the greatest interpretation of the soul of this opera. Once heard, the music will haunt your memory and reappear again and again!

It was in May 1978 when I first saw Thaïs in a production from the Met on tour with Beverly Sills and Sherrill Milnes as the principal characters. I knew nothing of the opera not even the Meditation but I vividly remember the performance. I had not seen or heard much of Thaïs until a few years ago I saw the new Met production in a live in HD with Fleming and Hampson as the principal characters and enjoyed it very much, except for the final scene with Fleming on some sort of altar that did not make much sense to me. I bought the Fleming/Hampson recording and have enjoyed it a lot.
Early last month I again saw Thaïs in LA with Nino Machaidze and the incomparable Plácido Domingo as the main characters. It was a wonderful performance even though I did not much care for the staging.
I was not aware of the Sills recording until after I had seen the LA performance. I have since bought it and I must say I prefer it to the Fleming/Hampson recording good as it is.
Thaïs was premiered by Sybil Sanderson and Mary Garden became later on a famous Thaïs after studying with Sanderson. Beverly Sills continued this tradition after studying the role with Mary Garden.
For this reason I believe the Sills performance to be more authentic than the much different approach (at least to my ears) that Fleming takes. They are both certainly valid and worthwhile.
I think after hearing Nino Machaidze, that she took an approach to the role more in line with Sills and at times I think she managed to sound a bit like Sills but this may be my imagination. I thought she was wonderful in the live performance.
The Sills recording was conducted by Maestro Lorin Maazel who played the Meditation himself.
