Book Description

October 28, 1997
t's a brief and confusing biblical tale. The chapter dedicated to ONAN in the Bible is more an enigma than an explicit tale. This painted comic book suggests several tracks to be followed across the Neguev desert in order to solve dilemmas that the Semites faced during the old ages in order to adopt Judaïsm or on the contrary that of the eternal absence of guilt leading to the " Paradise " of those who kill . When population is scarce and the desert is huge , man must give women a descendance ( specially if they are young and beautiful ) . It ' s a father ' s duty in such a place , that their sons have an attractive and stimulating wife . Those are Juda ' s whishes . Even if he finds his daughter-in-law irresistible , he chooses to remain a good father . Yet , the obscure memories of the past (Sichem) torture and kill Juda ' s sons after marrying Thamara . Thus , she becomes twice a widow . Fearing the same fate for his third son Juda decides not to marry him to Thamara breaking thus the sacred law . In the end, Thamara re-establishes the law of this beautiful and rude land broken by Juda. She will enable him to recover self-respect by giving again meaning and incarnation to his words.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic story plus feverish imaginings, July 11, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thamara and Juda (Paperback)
One classic of written word, more than any other, presents back to back images of violence, incest, betrayal, brutal warfare, and degradation of captives. It practically begs for a lurid rendering in graphic (and I mean !graphic!) novelization. That book, of course, is the Old Testament (Gen. 38). This rendering, suitably lurid, presents a telling of Onan's story. Yes that Onan, from whom we derive our word for onanism.

I haven't gone back to King James or any other source to check accuracy, but the broad outline of Thamara's story seems believable. She's really the central character of this sordid saga, no matter who it's remembered for. It starts with a drunken father, selling her off for a few more flasks of wine. One of the good guys, Juda, examines her in depth to establish virginity. He then passes her from son to son like some party favor. Onan appears as one of those sons, with poorly explained problems around the marriage bed and a poorly explained death after a poor performance. Then, once the calendar says it shouldn't happen, widowed Thamara shows up in the motherly way. She's about to be burned at the stake for fornication when, all of a sudden, she demonstrates not only that a man was involved, but a man of high political standing - oops, so sorry, didn't really mean that stake for you. If he's the one, then we just wipe the record and welcome the fruit of your womb.

Now, take all that, and add babes of bounding boobage, clothing transparent when present at all, and men with massive endowments and chronic priapism. If curvy hip and cantilevered bust mean more than individual distinctions between one woman and another, and if you tolerate some amount of aggression, non-consensual activity, and perversity, then this Bible story might be for you. I'm still thinking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Riverstone Winner, June 17, 2008
By
Ron "Magma" (Orange County, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thamara and Juda (Paperback)
I started seeking out this author and artist after running into the "Nagarya" series. As stated with other reviews, the text can be quite confusing. I understand that it is translated from French and that may have a lot to do it. The amusing part about the dialogue is that most of the time, you will be reading very old-style English as if you were reading excerpts directly from The Bible. Then when you come across lines like "hang out", "chill out" and "I was bummed", it'll kind of throw you off a bit. I don't know how close this story comes to Genesis 38 as I am not one who knows my Bible verses in and out, but the story flowed fairly well for me even though the dialogue had me needing to read some lines more than once. The art work in itself makes up for the deficiencies of this book. Vivid and stunning artwork that I have come to appreciate since picking up "Nagarya". Be warned, the artwork is VERY graphic but beautifully renderred. I can tell the artist has a lot of experience on the female form as that is what stands out in this book. All other figures, particularly male figures, not so much. I am awaiting my next order to arrive - Judith & Holophernes - to see if this book is as visually stunning as the rest. As far as the dialogue, let's just say that I won't hold my breath...

5.0 out of 5 stars All round a very good book!, October 23, 2003
This review is from: Thamara and Juda (Paperback)
Wow, I really liked this book. The art in here is really high quality. The story does get a little confusing at times, and you often find yourself asking why certain events have just happenend. However, if you can put up with that, and really appreciate high quality drawing you will enjoy this book. One word of warning: don't buy this is you do not like curvy women because that is almost all you get in this book. Don't let me put you off the females in this book are very very attractive, but if large chests and curvy bodies don't do it for you, you may struggle to enjoy this one! Overall I really enjoyed this, and recommend it to anyone who appreciates the full female form.
