First off the boys love it as a gift.

The gears are so difficult to move that the solar panel will not generate enough power, even when I used 1000 lumens of light.

I purchased nine of these to use at a middle school engineering camp, along with the physic discovery kits. I did not spend much time with the instructions but many interesting projects were constructed using the parts. Some of the parts are not very robust and can be difficult to take apart. The price is high for the included parts and they really should add a second regular battery holder to improve the speed of the included motor (it has one for the electric motor and one for charging a battery). Five stars if they get the price down or add some more parts.

I got this set and the wind powered set for my 8-year-old son who loves building, science, and mechanics. He's a wiz at Legos/Lego technic, building thousand-piece sets in a couple of hours, but he found this really frustrating because the pieces don't always fit together as the plans say they should. Then, once we managed to get the kit together the solar power is so week that the vehicle barely goes. They say you can combine sets to make more power, or use the battery back-up, but still it barely did anything, or wouldn't work because the pieces didn't fit together quite right (for example, in one case the gears didn't line up to fit together.)
Also, I initially had planned this project as a home schooling project, but the information about solar energy included in the kit's booklet is very minimal, so don't expect to learn a lot about solar energy by building this. The one thing we learned is that the amount of solar energy produced by this toy is insufficient to power it. For the record, my son still says this toy is fun, but he only picks it up once every couple of months, and always gets frustrated with it in the end. (p.s. this kit is NOT compatible with Lego)

Quite a disapointment, solar panel isn't robust enough to drive the vehicle and even with all the gears lined up properly and using a battery pack it's quite anti-climatic. Not much educational value over any other build kit without a "solar panel" many of which are cheaper.

I ordered this through Amazon for my goddaughter after getting a different Thames and Kosmos construction kit for a friend's son. My goddaughter loves it. In the first 2 days she built three different items and is learning a lot.

The gears are so difficult to move that the solar panel will not generate enough power, even when I used 1000 lumens of light. I ordered it to use at an educational science exhibit. I had to completely change my experiment,. purchase new supplies, and pay for overnight shipping because this (and the other kits by Thames&Kosmos) were unusable.

My grandson had another version of this set and LOVED it, so we bought him this one. He was initially disappointed as one of the pieces did not work. I emailed Thames and Kosmos and received the replacement part in less than one week. Great service!

I chose this product because of the educational promise. It was very successful and the boys loved it. I think other boys would like to receive this product.
