Superb gospel presentation of songs from the 40s-60s,

This review is from: Thank God (Audio CD)
Playing Time - 35:44
Songs: 1. Calling From Heaven, 2. That's All He's Asking Of Me, 3. Wait A Little Longer Please Jesus, 4. In God's Eyes, 5. Savior's Love, 6. I Drink From The Fountain, 7. The Lord's Last Supper, 8. Thank God, 9. Will The Angels Play Their Harps For Me, 10. I'll Be Going To Heaven Sometime, 11. God Moved In, 12. Some Beautiful Day After his impressive work with The Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe, and Jimmy Martin, mandolin player Doyle Lawson formed his own group back in 1979 to find his own sound that emphasizes strong quartet numbers like the ones his dad used to sing (in the Clinch Mountain Quartet). While his band's personnel have changed regularly over the years, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver consistently produce some of the best bluegrass and gospel around by capitalizing on each band member's strengths, while not sacrificing the overall sound that has thrice won them IBMA's Vocal Group of the Year Award. To follow their superior "Hard Game of Love" album with something equally impressive was surely a challenge. However, "Thank God" is another superb presentation that thematically offers us songs that were written and recorded in the 40s, 50s and 60s. There are classics recorded by the Stanley Brothers ("Calling From Heaven"), Don Reno and Red Smiley ("The Lord's Last Supper" and "Some Beautiful Day"), The Louvin Brothers ("That's All He's Asking of Me"), Bill Monroe ("Wait a Little Longer Please Jesus"), Carl Story ("Saviour's Love" and "I Drink from the Fountain"), Jim & Jesse ("In God's Eyes" and "God Moved In"), Hank Williams ("Thank God"), Flatt and Scruggs ("I'll be Going to Heaven Sometime"), and Hylo Brown ("Will the Angels Play their Harps for Me?"). After hearing this special set of gospel, we understand why this band is part of the bluegrass elite. Their vocal blend is excellent, and their playing is impeccable. The recording includes Doyle Lawson (mandolin), Jamie Dailey (guitar), Barry Scott (bass), Dale Perry (banjo), and J.W. Stockman and Jess Barry (twin fiddles). I understand that veteran Terry Baucom has now filled Perry's shoes. With their mix of youthful exuberance and veteran experience, the group displays what we've come to expect from them - virtuoso bluegrass musicianship and cohesive vocalizing. Scott has been with the group since 1995, and Dailey since 1998. At age 24 and 26, Barry and Stockman are the youngest members of the band, but they have received much support of their music, have won many fiddle contests, and even performed together in "Crucial County" which won the 2002 band competition in Blythe, Ca. Doyle Lawson has years of experience and a long record of accomplishment in his resume. His new album, the first on his own label (SSK Recording) in more than a decade, follows his long stint on the Sugar Hill record label. "Thank God" is being distributed by Crossroads Records. For nearly 25 years, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have established a professional reputation for some of the finest bluegrass and gospel music available. With a nod to bluegrass music's forefathers, the band now gives us another treasure with "Thank God" that reinforces their dedication to a well-grounded traditional sound. The gospel music that this band presents is important to them, and, over the years, they have produced many more gospel recordings than secular ones. Clearly, they feel that there is no better message than the message of Jesus Christ, they thank God for His guidance, and they hope that their "musical mission" will lead others to Him. What a wonderful CD!!!. I hope they never give up. My favorites were "Wait A Little Longer", "In God's Eyes" (I had no idea that Willie Nelson wrote the song, but I do remember hearing him singing it years ago. It is such a reverent song. Who knew?? "Savior's Love" was also very good. Oh, bother, they were all fantastic songs. One of my favorite styles in the band are the twin fiddles (remindful of old Ray Price music), they, along with mandolins, are my favorite instruments (NOTE: - Bluegrass). I mean, what is Bluegrass without them??
I don't believe that I had ever heard of Doyle Lawson before. It seems like I had heard of Silver Creek or Quick Silver or something similar. I am so happy to be turned on to them now. My husband of 54 years and I hadn't been exposed to any Bluegrass, except for our own collection in a very long time. We just don't get that kind of REAL MUSIC down here in SC (COME ON DOWN, DOYLE) (I KNOW - Hard to believe, but they only play that RAP, MEXICAN, and COUNTRY & WESTERN, (which isn't the country and western that we once knew, when we could hear Bill Monroe and REAL Country on the radio. Imagine, we used to criticize Merle, George, Buck and all our old Country stars for not being country enough. Now don't we wish we had more of them, but most of all, more of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. Why! I've even come to appreciate Waylon & Willie. (Waylon died way too young. Willie: Get back to writing some beautiful music.) And many more. Most of all though, I love Gospel Bluegrass. Well we had lost track of Bluegrass. That is until we were visiting our fishing cabin up in Franklin NC this past September when we happened to see the ad in the newspaper that Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and the Fiddling Dill Sisters would be appearing at the Smoky Mountain Center For The Performing Arts. Seeing "fiddling" and "Bluegrass" told us we had to get tickets, and so we went immediately over to town to the Drake Enterprises Offices and purchased the tickets. I was already familiar with Drake, having purchased my tax software from them for almost 10 years. (I had my own business as a tax preparer for 25 years until I suffered several strokes during the past 6 or 7 years and had to relinquish my business this past year after several months in hospital and rehabilitation. Thank God, as this CD is titled, I'm even still on this earth and have this computer and my 600 or so CDs. Thanks to Amazon I have exchanged all of my old LPs and Cassettes to CDs. I can't think of any that I haven't been able to locate through Amazon. I LOVE YOU AMAZON. Although I don't know what will happen to all of this music when I die. My kids nor grandkids like any of it. Hopefully, they can make some money off of them. The strokes have made it a struggle, but it's much easier than trying to handwrite. (Those little Dill Sisters and their band, The Cullowhee Valley Boys, of which, Cullowhee is just over the mountain and down the valley to Franklin) were very good also. A very appropriate opening act for Doyle and Quicksilver). May I thank Drake Enterprises for building that wonderful Smoky Mountain Center For The Performing Arts? It is a beautiful building and theater. It is a wonderful gift to the town and people of Franklin from Phil and Sharon Drake. They seem to be such great Christian people. Which must be the reason they strive to bring such wonderful music to us. Every year I received a beautiful Easter card from them and I think also a Christmas card. Those cards went on my displays for all of the other cards I received. Although I've had to end my contract with them, I hope I continue to receive those cards. I believe that God led my husband and me to the performance that day, and now I've found all of this amazing music on Amazon. Thanks again to Amazon for making it possible for me to discover and enjoy all of the beautiful music that is available. And again, thanks to the Drakes for all they have done for Franklin. I understand they were raised there, and possibly born there, and I know that isn't all they have done for othe community. They have built a community center geared for the children and there is also a lot of children programs available at the Performing Arts Center. Thanks again Amazon for allowing me to rattle on. From a Bluegrass FANatic. Vickie Peek
