Editorial Reviews

From Scientific American

Cohen's characters have unusual depth and her story succeeds as a warm, understanding consideration of friendship and, finally, death.

From The New Yorker

Not just another sports story.

You will miss out on a great read if you think this story is just about baseball. This is a compelling novel about an interracial friendship between a young Jewish boy and an older African American man. They find their common interest in a love for Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The story takes place in the 50's and the author, in subtle ways, shows the reader how things are dfferent for the African Americans in the U.S. at this time. Their friendship is believable and the story touching (I choke up every time I read it aloud). Although kids who enjoy sports will certainly appreciate the details, all kids will enjoy the message of friendship beyond racial barriers. I highly recommend this for every 4th-6th grader.

I grew up living across the street from Barbara Cohen, and she gave me a copy of Thank You, Jackie Robinson when it was first published. I recently found it again and quickly re-read the book. It is still a great story! Mrs. Cohen was always an inspiration to me, and now, as a writer myself, I have think the inscription she put in the front of my copy of this book was somewhat prophetic. She wrote, "I think [Sam] is a lot like you. He thinks a lot and understands more than he's willing to tell". My family and I all miss her.

My grandmother, Barbara Cohen, wrote this book in hopes that it would show that you don't have to be the same race in order to have an incredible bond. I think she did just that in this wonderful novel. Though she is not alive, she lives in our hearts, and can be remembered through this timeless classic. A must read.

I really liked Thank You Jackie Robinson by Barbara Cohen because there was a lot of drama. It was also very touching because Sam was caring to Davy later in the book. It was also exciting. This book takes place in 1947 and 1948. This is the story about a boy named Sam who is twelve-years-old and whose dad died when he was seven. Davy was a sixty-year-old black man who was Sam's mom's cook at their family's inn. Sam and Davy had nothing in common . . . except the Brooklyn Dodgers. In this story Sam and Davy become friends. Sam is trying to get a golden ball signed by Jackie Robinson and the rest of the team for Davy. Once again, this was an amazing book and I hope to read it again soon.

Sam is shy and has a hard time making friends. No one seems to appreciate Sam's one gift: he can recite the play-by-play for every game the Dodgers have played in recent history. Then Davy comes to work at Sam's mother's inn. Finally Sam has someone to share his love of the Dodgers with. This is the story of how Sam, a ten-year-old Jewish kid, got to be best friends with a sixty-year old negro, and in the process met Jackie Robinson.

A great tie-in to character counts and the fairness pillar.
