Alright, Drake's rapid rise to fame is much more warranted than other artists who come out with a monster song and fade away. If this was true, he would have been his plateau last year and he'd be in everyones rear view mirror. Instead, with MAJOR support of young money and other huge names in the biz like Kanye and Jay, he got propelled to the top quick. However, unlike other artists, he had hit after hit after hit! Also, SICK verses like on I'm goin in with weezy, say something, and lets not get it twisted, best I ever had is just one of the illest songs in a hot while. This is very characteristic of pop artists currently. Look at artists like Katy Perry, a couple cookie cutter hit songs and now she's one of the biggest pop stars in the world! Thats how it works now. The problem with hip hop is that its much more difficult to create hit song after hit song when compared to pop music. That being said, Drake has been able to put together catchy versus with a pretty sick flow that makes many of us wanting more. Also, he's different, he's form the burbs, he's educated, he doesn't have the "traditional" hip hop background; I just hope he embraces this and doesn't try to put on a fake show of being thug life, that would be a travesty. Living thug life is not prerequisite for hip hop artists. I have found that this type of lifestyle simply provides anecdotal situations to rap about. Hip hop music is bigger than ever now an it cannot and will not be reserved only for those from the hood.

Let's face it, when you hear "Kush roll, glass full, I prefer the better things.." with your speakers blasting your whole situation gets hyped. Drake sounds great rapping, without questions, he sounds like a coherent less wheezy, weezy, which is a good thing. True, he does not have struggle to rap about, he raps about popping bottles and women with some songs from the heart. On the other hand, lines like "I dont really know who I'ma lose this year.." front a thug life that he simply isn't living. Also, his liberal usage of n---- just seems like he's trying to hard to fit into some thug mold that is just not believable. I'd have much more respect for him if he told stories in his raps (ala "fireworks"), kept his flow, and stop referencing anything remotely related to struggles experienced by those in the hood.

This album has its ups and downs:

Ups:

Over

Find your love (ehh, repetetive, mediocre singing, but fun to listen to)

Up all night

Fancy (love the swizz beats influence)

Fireworks (perfect example of what Drake should be -- rapping flawlessly about who he is, his vulnerabilities, and whats real)

Karaoke (Lot of people don't like this song, I think it has a nice, chill flow)

Over (although he sounds like he's trying to be too hard on this son)

Show me a good time (great showcase of the ability to rap quickly while enunciation without sounding gimmicky)

Miss me (his style of R&B)

light up (jay's verse)

Thank me know (love the flow, the cockiness that exudes from this song, and the infectious hook)

Downs:

The resistance (nice hook, rest is eh)

Shut it down (unnecessary, boring, sounds like a bad r. kelly karaoke)

Unforgettable (sounds like one verse on repeat..)

light up (drake's verse)

Drake's not going anywhere, thats a fact. He can rap, kinda sing, and kinda act so he's got the triple threat. Plus he's intelligent and has high expectations. If he can limit his singing to appropriate times (like singing hooks, and singing catchy songs like "find your love," singing will work for him. If he raps about real life situations and tells interesting stories, his flow is tight enough to keep his rap career on full blast. He's close to creating a legendary album I think, he just needs to get focussed and cut the fat.

I don't understand how recovery got better reviews than this. I listened to eminems recovery album a couple of times then I got bored with it. I found myself listening to thank me later constantly even till this day. I think this is a solid sophomore album, and it makes me look foward to all drake has to offer in the future... I think this is only the beginning for him, this guy is so talented.

I've been a Drake fan ever since his 2009 So Far Gone release. Ever since then Drake was heavily featured on everyone's album and/or song and his label CEO, Lil Wayne helped build a lot of hype around Drake while we waited for his debut. Drake certainly lived up to the hype on his 2010 release of Thank Me Later. When this album was released, you couldn't walk or drive down the street without hearing someone blasting it from their car, home, mp3 etc. If you didn't have it then you were living under a rock.

On Thank Me Later, Drake is proof that you don't have to be hard to make it as a Hip-Hop artists. Drake is obviously a good rapper who can maintain a steady and catchy flow on almost any beat. The production was also one of the key highlights of the album with most of it being handled by 40 with additional beats from Swizz Beats, Kanye West & Timbaland. Drakes only setback is his subject matter. The listener can grow tired of hearing him rap about how much he can't believe how famous he is, look at all this money he has, how much he really misses some girl who probably doesn't feel the same or him trying to currently pursue a female. There isn't one Drake song ever that doesn't deal with one of, if not all of, those topics. That being said, even though he talks about the same things, he still makes it sound good and new for a while. Drake is not a thug and does not imply this in any way in any of his music. This is refreshing to hear nowadays but gives him less to rap about since he hasn't experienced any struggles trying to survive and make it out of the hood.

High Moments:

Over- (This is the first single. Drake showcases how well he can rap by attaking the Boi1da produced track and assurung his fans that he wont be leaving the game any time soon)

Up All Night- This is another rap song on the album featuring Nicki Minaj. Drake instantly gets the listener hyped when he starts off "Kush rolled, glass full". This is another track where Drake shows just how good he can rap. He also displays his loyalty for his "team" and how hard he works. It seems his verse is outmanned, for lack of a better word, by Nicki's verse.

Miss Me- Another single and hit for Drake. This song is a bit more R&B and features great verses from Drake and Lil Wayne. After delivering a smooth yet hard hitting verse, Drake eases in to the soothing and melodic chorus like no one else can and Wayne delivers his verse.

Find Your Love- Drake is not the best singer. However in this song Drake doesn't pressure his voice or try to push past it's limitations like he does on occasion. This Kanye West produced single is completely sung and sounds like it's straight off of Kanye's 808's & Heartbreak album. But Drake sings better than Kanye.

Light up- A straight up Hip-hop song with a very simple beat that you'll either love or want to fall asleep to. Jay-Z is featured and does the track justice while Drake had an OK verse. There is a remix where Lil Wayne records his verse over the phone from jail and has a better verse than Jay and Drake. His verse is placed after Drake & Jay's so I just replaced the original with the remix on the album and it's a lot better.

Fancy- Although Swizz Beats can be a little annoying on the hook(why does he always feel the need to talk on all the songs he produces?) he still couldn't ruin the wonderful performances of Drake, T.I. and Mary J.Blidge on backing vocals. This is yet another single from the album. This was every girls theme in 2010 and made everyone feel Fancy. It's a very catchy song and is easy on the ears(excluding Swizz Beats).

Show Me a Good Time- This is a very upbeat feel good R&B song that can easily brighten anyones day. It's perfect for the summer time. The piano is very nice touch to the high pitched sampled whine in the beat.

Thank Me Now- One of the best songs on the album. This song features a synthesized beat produced by Timbaland and is very pleasing to the ear. You'll be overtaken and entertained at Drake's boastful tone in his flow. This is the last song on the album and the ending leaves you feeling relaxed, amazed, satisfied and wanting more.

The Resistance- This is a very mellow song and has to be played at the right time that fits your mood otherwise you wont feel like hearing it. It's a good song to kickback to.

Shut it Down- Another R&B song featuring The Dream. Dream outshines Drake vocally on this record from the moment his verse starts. But remember, Drake is not the best singer and is a better rapper. Drake still does a pretty good job and doesn't try to exceed his limitations.

Unforgettable- This track features Young Jeezy and it samples Aliyah's voice. The sample was a very nice touch and really helped bring the whole song together. I'm not a Jeezy fan but he did better than he usually does and actually compliments the song with his raspy and almost meaningful vocals and lyrics. Drake had a nice verse and his vocals on the hook nicely complimented the song as well.

Low Moments:

Karaoke- This song is an acquired taste. The beat is a little cheesy and Drake's vocals aren't killer. Although I don't really mind the track and might listen to it if it comes on, it doesn't do the album any favors.

Fireworks- This is actually the first track and it features Alicia Keys. I'm not a big Keys fan and pay homage for her lyrics but her vocals have never been fantastic. Drake's flow can be a little tiring and borderline boring on this song. The song isn't awful or even bad for that matter but it's a low moment on the album for me. I'm sure some would disagree though.

Cece's Interlude- I like this one but Drake over does it a little on the singing. This is one of those songs where Drake forgets that he's not that great of a singer. It's just a short interlude though and it does have a nice guitar solo at the end.

Bottom line: This is a fantastic album especially for a up and coming artists debut. Not many albums came close to this record and I give it 5 stars for having no really bad songs and mostly high moments. Very high moments! Even the low moments aren't bad songs but they aren't as good as the others. I expect good things from Drake in the future and hope he does well. I also hope he switches up the subject matter.
