3.0 out of 5 stars Comic sixties pop of variable quality, October 10, 2003
This review is from: Thank U Very Much: Very Best of (Audio CD)
The Scaffold, a Liverpool group, were not a serious pop group at all, but they had a few truly brilliant songs. However, their sense of humor and mine are not always the same so there are actually only a few of their songs that I enjoy. I make plenty of use of the skip button when I play Scaffold music - they are unique in that respect.

Their biggest UK hit was Lily the Pink, a nonsense song about a lady and her medicinal compounds that topped the charts of Christmas 1968. Another huge hit was Thank u very much, a top five UK hit the year before.

My favorite song is Do you remember, which was only a minor hit. It is a song that evokes memories of walks in the countryside (no, it's not a country song, but I'd like to hear a country version of it) and other pleasant times.

Their other great songs include Liver birds (the theme to a TV comedy series of the same title), Gin gan goolie (a minor hit) and a cover of Liverpool Lou. The quality of the other songs varies considerably and how many you like will depend on your sense of humor, although I'll be surprised if you like them all.

The best songs are worth five stars but this is one case where a ten track collection would be better, as long as the best ten tracks are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it the Beatles in disquise?, July 23, 2007

They say half a great album is almost as good as a great album. This is the case with this one. If you program the songs right you've got another Abbey Road. No jokin'. And why shouldn't it be. The songs were written by Mike McGear who is Paul McCartney's younger brother. The sessions were recorded in Abbey Road during 1966 - 1971. Paul McCartney produced some of the cuts. What you have here is one of the best examples of Beatlesque ever. Right up there with Bellybutton by Jellyfish, Dukes of the Stratosphear by XTC, Klaatu and Hope by Klaatu, Deface the Music by
Todd, most anything by SLOAN and dare I say it,the Rutles' All You Need is Cash. Why there is even a song that sounds more like John Lennon circa 1970 than John his adorable little self. This ones a must for must have Beatle collectors.
If you liked the Bonzo Dog Do-dah Band you'll love this one. As we said in the sixties, "try it you'll like it!"
