son finds birthmother for joyful reunion, December 21, 1999
Thank You,Son, For Finding Me - A Birthmother1s Story by BethKane. Aslan Publishing. 1999. 184 pp. Kane begins her story withher receipt in 1993 of a special-delivery letter from her son from a teenage pregnancy in 1947 whom she had put up for adoption and had not seen since then. At the time, Catholic nuns had told her, 3Forget it and get on with your life.2--and she had tried to follow their advice even though she could never completely keep thoughts of him out of her mind, especially when so many young men his age were being sent to war in Vietnam. Kane told her husband-to-be Charles about this episode in her past before they married. They had two daughters, one of whom died of cancer. This sadness in her life which intensified the author1s thoughts about the fate of her adopted son, although she never developed any intention of trying to find him. Her subsequent meeting changed her mind on the matter. She realized that it was inestimably beneficial emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually for both herself and her son to meet, and to develop a relationship they never had. And she realized that for the longest time she had been suppressing desires to have her son in her life. Kane found too that reunion with her son brought back memories of her younger years which she had to face. It was a time of anxiety, growth, and unprecedented happiness for Kane--a story she relates in an honest, plain, and deeply touching way.
