Book Description

So many people are stuck in the pain of their problems, unable to see beyond the hurt in their lives. Giving thanks in such circumstances may seem impossible, but thankfulness is a powerful tool God uses to heal wounded hearts and transform “stuck” people. In A Thankful Heart, readers will hear real life stories from people like them who have discovered the power of thankfulness to change both their inward attitude and their outward situation. Plus, this warm, inspiring book contains a Thankfulness Journal to guide readers into a new perspective and record the healing process as it unfolds.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As national director of First Place, an evangelical dieting counterpart to secular programs such as Weight Watchers, Lewis understands the power of motivating people to change. She does it effectively and has applied this positive discipline to her own life. In this book on thankfulness, Lewis is candid about her own struggles to embrace gratitude when on Thanksgiving Day 2001, her middle daughter, a married mother of three, was killed by a drunk driver. With this admission, Lewis immediately gains an audience as she challenges readers to adopt by choice (and not simply assume by a faith-inspired osmosis) an attitude graced by thankfulness in all things, in all situations and at all times. With personal stories of trials including her own past bankruptcy, loss of employment and her husband's current battle against cancer, Lewis probes into the pain of life, proving she's experienced enough with its stings to speak from its darker side. The book doesn't always deliver fresh insights; many of these themes have been hashed out before. But Lewis's personal experiences give her authenticity as she expounds with conviction that it is only via a grateful heart that Christians can experience daily peace despite the reliably unreliable circumstances of life. 5.0 out of 5 stars I have truly been blessed by this book. January 24, 2006
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
What a terrific book. I have read a great many self-help books, both with and without a biblical focus. This is by far the best of them all. Carole gives many examples in each chapter on how to develop and put into practice "a thankful heart." As you read, it all begins to seem so obvious, and is truly life-changing. I thank God and Carole for this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Develop An Attitude of Gratitude August 27, 2006
Here's a powerful little book which will help increase the thankfulness in your life. Touching and positive personal stories combine with simple practical advice and Scripture to make this book a solid help for anyone.

As Carole Lewis writes on page 14, "We can bring an attitude of thankfulness to any experience; and when we do, it's like a breath of fresh air rushing in and blowing away the dust of decay. Some people possess an attitude of gratitude more naturally than others. But all of us are called to step onto this path. That's what this book discusses at length. As we learn to clutivate a thankful heart, our grumbling and complaining will cease and be replaced by a spirit that blesses God, blesses those around us and even blesses ourselves. There is an answer to the question of what to do when life doesn't go perfectly: Give thanks in every situation in life."

As a gift or for yourself, anyone can gain from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Developing an Attitude of Gratitude May 12, 2009
Carole Lewis has every reason in the world to be bitter, resentful, angry, frustrated and filled with despair. Instead she is thankful even when tragedy strikes close to home. You may think it is impossible to give thanks even in negative situations, yet Carole shows you how it can be done. She also shows how three ways of being thankful can help overcome the stress of life. Each chapter explores a new way you can start to show gratitude and there is a prayer that makes this practical and life changing. I'd recommend this book to anyone at any level of spiritual development. The ideas are life changing no matter what situation you are facing in your daily life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic and biblical April 11, 2006
A Thankful Heart is like a warm hug from this amazing author! Carole Lewis offers readers a glimpse into her own life, revealing a mosaic of sorrow and disappointment, which surprisingly ushers in times of Christian joy. No, she hasn't uncovered a secret remedy to the world's problems; she merely decided to take the Bible verses on thankfulness to heart.

As the current leader of First Place, a Christian weight-loss program, the author understands that the thoughts of the heart greatly influence the rest of the body. Being thankful in all situations is both a command from God as well as a choice to make. As believers gently rest in God's providence and direction, they can confidently praise Him in all circumstances. This inward spiritual trust then transcends to the physical realm, providing a tangible feeling of peace and joy. Yet, it all starts with a conscious decision.

Carole Lewis had to make this decision many times in her life. These pages allow readers to come alongside her as she hears the news of her daughter's death, files for bankruptcy, and provides support to her husband following a diagnosis of cancer. Each of these personal stories resounds with a stark sense of realism. As she reaches out through a veil of tears to embrace the biblical concept of giving thanks in all circumstances, grief gives way to gratitude. These pages literally tremble with the exchange of emotions and the excitement of drawing closer to the Lord in perfect trust.

A Thankful Heart pulses with a sense of authenticity and authority. - Joyce Handzo, Christian Book
