5.0 out of 5 stars Finally...
In this era of "Girls Gone Wild," there's the expectation that women are supposed to be coming every minute. In reality most women have trouble orgasming with men, and many more have to "learn" to have an orgasm, like Altman. I'm surprised this topic hasn't been tackled before. Altman is brutally funny and she doesn't overwrite.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painfully obtuse
I would have given the book 2 stars, but I'm blown away by how many reviewers gave it 5, so I'm downgrading it to one, just keep some balance here.

After a lifetime of being inexplicably squeamish about sex and her body, a twenty-something writer who's never had an orgasm decides to have one, or at least get a book deal by trying. She interviews sex workers...

Thanks for Coming is simply an amazing book. It is smart, insightful and laugh out loud funny. This book is not just about orgasm, Mara Altman takes you on a journey through her sexual, relationship, and body hang ups.. i found myself relating to her issues and admiring her bravery at just putting it all out there. She is a brave writer.. it is a wonderful book. I recommend Thanks for Coming to everyone i know, and I've bought copies for all of the women in my life. Do yourself a favor, read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're Welcome, April 16, 2009

Often hilariously funny but with a lot of very serious and thoughtful points to make, this is not a "sex book," but I can safely say it's the best book about sex I've ever read. It's about much more than that, too, though - self-image and self-consciousness, relationships, intimacy, expectations, and just plain compelling stories. Altman has a terrific voice and is a brave writer - she doesn't shy away from anything - and the result is a really great read.

Seriously. Every female would have their life changed by reading this book. And men would finally lean something about women if they gave this book a shot. This is not a sleezy sex book. This is a journey toward discovering ones one self that all of us could only dream of having the guts to go on. Fortunately for us, we can learn a lot from Mara's incrediably brave journey. And it not all self-reflection and sex education. This book is damn funny and highly addicting. I could not put this book down. I think my boyfriend started to get worried.
Do the world a favor everyone, read this book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars success, April 23, 2009
This review is from: Thanks for Coming: One Young Woman's Quest for an Orgasm (P.S.) (Paperback)

there is nothing inevitable about reaching climax, nor about this book succeeding.

and yet, through equal parts self-reflection, scientific investigation, and sociocultural analysis, it succeeds triumphantly.

yum.

This book is objective and to the point. One doesn't have to read between any lines. The author is completely open and honest about this topic. I respect her wanting to share such personal information with the public.

She interviews sex workers and doctors and orgasm gurus. But the writer is so self-involved and infantile, nothing of the other characters can come through. It's just a detailed chronicle of her own self-obsession.

One positive thing to say about this book: Mara Altmann went through with her project. A lesser soul would have given up -- as I had to, halfway through reading it. I don't know if Mara ever has an orgasm. I assume she must have had one, at least for the sake of the story. But I don't actually care.

They say it takes courage to write a bad book. Mara Altman must be very brave.
