Fabulous performances; subpar sound engineering,

Just the performance of "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" makes the DVD worth purchasing. Mack Wilberg's arrangement of the hymn is brilliant, and the choir's performance throughout the concert is powerful and heartfelt. The orchestra's performance is uneven, and so is the sound quality of the recording. If you're deciding between formats, go with the DVD instead of CD. The DVD has better sound quality. But, more important, the DVD is a live recording of the actual performance. The combination of sight and sound is stunning, from the energy of the performers to the perfectly timed (but perfectly genuine) tear that runs down a singer's cheek during the final piece.

There is nothing to dislike about this CD. A friend made me listen to it several years ago, against my will. But I had to listen to it again and again, and now it's a Thanksgiving staple in my household, or pretty much anytime I want to feel good about God and Country. The arrangement of My Shepherd Will Supply My Need makes me weep, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic makes me stand up and cheer.

A Kid's Review

I bought this CD for my husband to listen to in the car because it contains several of his favorite hymns. I think that BYU chorus does a good job with these but it is hard to tell because the sound levels are terrible. I normally turn my car stereo up to between 4 and 8 for listening to the radio or our other CDs. With this one, I have to turn it up to 28 just in order to hear that there are voices accompanying the orchestra. During quiet segments, the thing has to be turned up as loud as it will go in order to hear anything. Now, this would be fine if it were just a matter of having a particularly quiet CD, but when the orchestra kicks into exuberant mode, the radio has to be turned back down to about 10 or it will blow us out of the car and destroy our new stereo. I am very disappointed. I completely appreciate the fact that a good presentation of sacred music will have some ebb and flow in the strength and volume of the sound, but it should never drop out all together, you should be able to hear the vocals above the orchestra and the loud points should not take out your ear-drums. They need to send their sound mixer back to tech school.
