Book Description

September 3, 2002 2 and up

Thanksgiving is almost Here!

It's time for Mrs. Madoff's class to put on the Thanksgiving play. Charlie is the ship called the Mayflower, Sarah is a Pilgrim, and Eveline is Chief Massasoit. Everyone has a role to play and a reason to be thankful for the special things that made the first feast possible. The story of the first Thanksgiving is one we'll never forget -- especially when we have friends and family to celebrate it with year after year.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

After Charlie's teacher reads a story about the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving, the class decides to act it out. Charlie is the Mayflower. Opposite a picture of Charlie decked out in a paper ship is the "page" from the book his teacher read, showing the Mayflower on a churning ocean. Everyone has a role: Pablo, Kate, and Evan are Wampanoags, the people who were already on the land when the Pilgrims arrived. Michiko, Sam, and Sarah are Pilgrims from England. On each two-page spread the children are shown in their costumes opposite a picture from the teacher's book. In a preschooler's simple, straightforward voice, one young Wampanoag says she is thankful that "her new neighbors were peaceful Pilgrims looking for a new land to live in, and not mean people looking for someone to fight with." A small Pilgrim adds her thanks that "the beautiful land of Massachusetts had enough good things for everyone." There's no room for cynicism in this genuinely warm, honest book about a time that, for a while anyway, was peaceful, with people who were capable of friendly coexistence. As in companion books Halloween Day and Show & Tell Day, Anne and Lizzy Rockwell make a special day fun and understandable for the youngest celebrants. From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Just as they did in Halloween Day (HarperCollins, 1997), the Rockwells answer the many questions young readers have about one of America's holidays. Traditions are described through the voice of a preschool boy. The child and his classmates take different roles in a class play, and each character explains why he or she is thankful. The page facing each cameo features a "snapshot" of a historical incident such as the landing at Plymouth Rock or the Thanksgiving feast. Rockwell's cartoon illustrations of dewy-eyed preschoolers in their various roles combine with the simple text to create an excellent example of a holiday concept book for inquisitive young readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanksgiving Day, February 8, 2001
By
Sarah Kuhn (Richmond, Kentucky USA) - See all my reviews
Thanksgiving Day, by Anne Rockwell, conveys the story of Thanksgiving through colorful pictures and historical facts. The story itself is being told by Charlie, a student in Mrs. Madoff's class. Charlie and his classmates have put on a Thanksgiving Day play. The play has helped the students learn about the events and the people from that "first" Thanksgiving. I really like this book. Any reader would enjoy the brightly illustrated pictures and the lessons being taught. Halloween Day is another good example of Anne Rockwell and Lizzy Rockwell's ability to portray historical facts through an enjoyable story with the use of vivid illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Correct Reference to the Wampanoag People, Not Indians, September 27, 2011
This review is from: Thanksgiving Day (Paperback)
This book makes the correct reference to Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, not Pilgrims and Indians. It is always preferred to use the name of a tribe, instead of the catch-all "Native American" or "Indian." So I was thrilled to see there was a Thanksgiving book where I didn't have to use white out and write over "Indian"!
