Grade 2-4-In large-print type, these curriculum-related titles introduce the origin of a holiday and its celebration in the U.S. In noting modern-day activities associated with Thanksgiving, the author cites the annual Macy's Parade, local and national football games, fund-raising foot races, and community projects for feeding the homeless. She also mentions the traditional presidential pardon of a turkey. In addition to historical perspective, the traditions of the Chinese New Year are discussed with a special emphasis on the dragon parade. Since the celebration of this holiday differs from city to city, the book cites one or two events specific to New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Each book also offers directions for a related craft. Average-quality, black-and-white and color photographs, reproductions, and illustrations add interest. Adequate additions where more material is needed.

Gr. 3-6. These two titles in the new Finding Out about Holidays series offer sufficient information to support middle-grade reports. Thanksgiving includes plenty of interesting facts (for example, the amount of food consumed annually on the special day and harvest festivals throughout history), along with a retelling of what went on during the famous day in 1620 that started it all. Chinese New Year delves into the symbolism behind the holiday's traditions, while providing insight into the larger Chinese culture and describing Chinese American celebrations across the country. Both titles will hook readers with straightforward, engaging language, color photos on each page, and plenty of specific details. Glossary and brief listings of additional resources are appended.
