5.0 out of 5 stars Reviving a Legacy
What a treasure is Thanksgiving, A Time To Remember! The artwork is beautiful, and the uplifting, reverent music arrranged by Keith Lynch and Allan Mesko is refreshing. We have long overlooked the enduring legacy of freedom we have received as Americans. I am grateful to learn new details of the heritage we have in the land of the free and the brave. 3.0 out of 5 stars The book is fine, but the CD is awful
If you're into Pilgrims, then this book is worth a gander. But whatever you do, toss the CD as soon as possible. Arranged and performed by someone whose sense of tempo fell overboard on the journey from England and who thinks the hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" is a dirge, the CD will send your family into torpor and make the musically inclined among you...

Barbara Rainey has written a beautiful keepsake book recalling the history of this great and mighty land. God has been good to us, and He faithfully led brave men and women to establish this nation, where we who remember can continue to thank our Lord. I did note that the Fourth Commandment is correctly noted on page 30, not the Ninth, as a reviewer had mentioned. Every home needs this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to share with your family at Thanksgiving, November 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Thanksgiving (A FamilyLife Book): A Time to Remember (Family Life Books) (Hardcover)
This book is well written with great facts about the pilgrims' journey and experiences once they reached America. It also includes passages from the Pilgrims' journals and letters, which makes it personal. A great book to share at Thanksgiving.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a tribute!, March 24, 2003
This is a great book to remember from whence we came and thank God for the manifold blessings he has bestowed, not only on our country, but in our own personal lives and families.

Make this a Thanksgiving tradition with your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews!

5.0 out of 5 stars Festive Gem, October 20, 2007
This review is from: Thanksgiving (A FamilyLife Book): A Time to Remember (Family Life Books) (Hardcover)
This gorgeous book is the perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving and learn its miraculous story. Barbara Rainey, a renown Christian writer, puts together a book of many parts that will appeal to people of all ages.

The main large text deals with the details of the Pilgrim's journey, but there are also sub-sections that mention the origin of fasting, the relationship between the Indians and the Pilgrims, what it means to give thanks to God and choose to be grateful, and even the Thanksgiving Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln. The book is filled with true tributes to God; Rainey not only gives the reader personal advice on how to give thanks to Him, but she also draws from various other sources, including quotes from the Bible and two of the most upstanding Pilgrims. Her relation of this holiday to true Christianity is wonderful and should serve as a reminder to every American what this holiday is truly about.

Along with the wonderful story and quotes are gorgeous illustrations and a CD of holiday music. I really can't think of a better piece to represent Thanksgiving and I recommend this to everyone of all ages! I curled up today with this book and a mug of hot apple cider and I couldn't have been happier :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for making Thanksgiving special, December 7, 2007

I love this book by Barbara Rainey. We get so much mis-information about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, but Mrs. Rainey sets it all straight with her much-researched book. It's easy to share with friends and family with a wonderful CD of "Thanksgiving carols" to get you excited about Thanksgiving, instead of it marking the beginning of the Christmas season!

4.0 out of 5 stars Had to purchase after seeing it at my sisters!, November 27, 2008
This review is from: Thanksgiving (A FamilyLife Book): A Time to Remember (Family Life Books) (Hardcover)
I had the benefit of being able to glance at the book and hear the music before purchasing the item. In regards to the reviewer who did not care for the music selections, I think purchasers should understand what the Thanksgiving holiday is all about. There is more to it then turkey, football, and shopping. This book is a great easy reading reference as to the foundation of this holiday. Yes, many of the songs on the CD are religous based selections however, that is what our country was founded on so it makes sense that those are the types of songs that are included. When I hear the music selections I can almost visualize our forefathers listening to the same type of instruments.

This book helped us bring God back in Thanksgiving! I have 3 elementary children in public school and they are NEVER taught the real reasons and struggles the Pilgrims endured so many hardships for. We used this book as a devotional for the month of November to remind ourselves what we are celebrating! Wonderful grounding tool for our family. THANK YOU!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What I expected and more, December 6, 2011

I checked this book out at a library and decided I had to purchase it. It provides wonderful historical information and encouraging thoughts that assist in helping families focus on being thankful. This is something that we can pull out year after year to reflect on those who first celebrated thanksgiving, and then come together and reflect on the many blessings that we have now. I love the lined notes in the back that will allow us to journal these thoughts so we will always be able to look at holidays past and present (which is why I bought the book). This book is to Thanksgiving what Luke chapter 2 and Twas the Night Before Christmas are to Christmas. A must have for the Thanksgiving holiday!

4.0 out of 5 stars More than a coffee table book, November 22, 2011
If you can only buy one Thanksgiving book then Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember by Barbara Rainey is the one to get!

Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember shares the story of the Pilgrims and their first Thanksgiving feast. It also briefly tells how our current Thanksgiving holiday came to exist.

My favorite feature of A Time to Remember is that you can read the entire story or you can read the large print for a shorter version. This means if you have older children or teenagers you read the more detailed version but if you have little guys (like I do) you read the shorter, less-detailed version. It's like having 2 books in one!

With beautiful full-color photographs this is so much more than a coffee table book. It's a family tradition you'll enjoy reading every year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, fact-filled, must-have book for Thanksgiving, November 20, 2011

This book was given to us when our son was born almost two years ago. I later bought a copy for my sister as well. Last year I couldn't find it after the move, and this year my almost-four-years-old daughter is just beginning to understand the rudimentary concept of a holiday for thankfulness. As I have explored this book with her, I am so excited to share the heritage of the Pilgrims and the true story of God's providence in that epic adventure. I can see this book being used year after year for many annual remembrances.

One fantastic feature of the book is the way it is organized. There are two sizes of fonts, and the larger font is the "abridged" version for smaller children or a shorter time frame. Reading both sets of fonts gives the expanded story, and additionally there are sidebar articles to further deepen the information.

And the book is beautiful! I keep mine displayed on our mantle, and the outside is just a glimpse of how lovely the inside is as well.

Another unexpected bonus is the music CD which is included. I listened to it for the first time this month, and was delighted by this stately set of piano renditions of Thanksgiving, harvest, and praise hymns and songs. It has been played many times since and will no doubt accompany the festive food preparations this Thursday.
