Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rainey writes that for her family, "Thanksgiving was not going to be just eating, hours of TV football, naps and leftover turkey sandwiches-followed by a stress-filled Friday of frantic Christmas shopping at the mall." Instead, she seeks to educate her children-and others, through this book-about the heritage of faith and freedom that is celebrated in the national holiday of Thanksgiving. The book revisits the schoolchild version of the Pilgrims' first festival of plenty, and is meant to be read aloud by families on Thanksgiving Day (preferably before small stomachs start to grumble). The history is romantic and full of implausibly brave, righteous, magnanimous Pilgrims. There are small factual errors, as when Rainey claims that the Pilgrims observed the Sabbath in accordance with the ninth commandment instead of the fourth. Despite these flaws, the book is well-designed, with informative sidebars and attractive full-color illustrations. A half-hour-long CD of Thanksgiving music rounds out the package.

What a treasure is Thanksgiving, A Time To Remember! The artwork is beautiful, and the uplifting, reverent music arrranged by Keith Lynch and Allan Mesko is refreshing. We have long overlooked the enduring legacy of freedom we have received as Americans. I am grateful to learn new details of the heritage we have in the land of the free and the brave. Barbara Rainey has written a beautiful keepsake book recalling the history of this great and mighty land. God has been good to us, and He faithfully led brave men and women to establish this nation, where we who remember can continue to thank our Lord. I did note that the Fourth Commandment is correctly noted on page 30, not the Ninth, as a reviewer had mentioned. Every home needs this book!

This book is well written with great facts about the pilgrims' journey and experiences once they reached America. It also includes passages from the Pilgrims' journals and letters, which makes it personal. A great book to share at Thanksgiving.

This gorgeous book is the perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving and learn its miraculous story. Barbara Rainey, a renown Christian writer, puts together a book of many parts that will appeal to people of all ages.

The main large text deals with the details of the Pilgrim's journey, but there are also sub-sections that mention the origin of fasting, the relationship between the Indians and the Pilgrims, what it means to give thanks to God and choose to be grateful, and even the Thanksgiving Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln. The book is filled with true tributes to God; Rainey not only gives the reader personal advice on how to give thanks to Him, but she also draws from various other sources, including quotes from the Bible and two of the most upstanding Pilgrims. Her relation of this holiday to true Christianity is wonderful and should serve as a reminder to every American what this holiday is truly about.

Along with the wonderful story and quotes are gorgeous illustrations and a CD of holiday music. I really can't think of a better piece to represent Thanksgiving and I recommend this to everyone of all ages! I curled up today with this book and a mug of hot apple cider and I couldn't have been happier :)

I love this book by Barbara Rainey. We get so much mis-information about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, but Mrs. Rainey sets it all straight with her much-researched book. It's easy to share with friends and family with a wonderful CD of "Thanksgiving carols" to get you excited about Thanksgiving, instead of it marking the beginning of the Christmas season!

I just received the book and cd today. First off, I haven't read the actual book as of yet. This is just a review on the cd while it was fresh on my mind. I was very excited and intriged by the idea of Thanksgiving music. I was highly curious to see what the music actually was since none of the reviews really mention what the music is. After listening to it, I suddenly realized that it is ALL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC! There are no words on the whole cd. This would be fine if you knew what you were getting, but since no one listed this fact, I was thoroughly disappointed. The music is expertly done with a primary piano and other orchestral instruments mixed in, but I was hoping for these amazing Thanksgiving songs that the kids and I could learn to sing together and actually make that a part of celebrating Thanksgiving. It rather sounds like instrumental Christmas carols (even though it's not actual Christmas songs - it has that feel to it)...disappointing. Great background music for a peaceful mood.

Here are the list of songs in case someone wants to know:
1. Medley: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling/Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
2. Lean On, O King Eternal
3. Come Ye Thankful People, Come
4. Simple Gifts/We Gather Together
5. O God, Our Help in Ages Past
6. O, the Deep Deep Love of Jesus
7. O, for a Thousand Tongues
8. Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven
9. Be Thou My Vision
10. For the Beauty of the Earth
11. Medley: This Is My Father's World/O worship the King
12. It Is Well With My Soul
13. Medley: Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken/We Praise Thee, O God
14. Let All Things Now Living
15. Medley: Faith of Our Fathers?America the Beautiful
16. Doxology

I had the benefit of being able to glance at the book and hear the music before purchasing the item. In regards to the reviewer who did not care for the music selections, I think purchasers should understand what the Thanksgiving holiday is all about. There is more to it then turkey, football, and shopping. This book is a great easy reading reference as to the foundation of this holiday. Yes, many of the songs on the CD are religous based selections however, that is what our country was founded on so it makes sense that those are the types of songs that are included. When I hear the music selections I can almost visualize our forefathers listening to the same type of instruments.
