Eleven-year-old Addie's family spans three generations; her busy but understanding grandmother, her preoccupied and undemonstrative father, and our skinny heroine in glasses and braids. Having learned about the original Thanksgiving at school, Addie wants to reenact the ideals of gratitude and hospitality in her 1947 present. Trouble is--her proposed guest of honor is a cantankerous old coot who cheated her father over some construction work. The bad blood between them is so thick that it will be impossible to corral both men at the same table.

Yet this spunky little gal, who wants to be a painter in Paris, is determined to arrange a reconciliation, dragging her best friend, loyal Carla Mae, into the risky business. Addie insists on being neighborhly to the recluse, which leads to her discovery of an unkempt dream horse. This book, the sequel to THE HOUSE WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE, proves that kindness is never wasted--a lesson that children need to learn and adults need to remember. A short, light read which will appeal to gradeschool girls (especially those looking for a "short" book report)!

I have always loved "House Without A Christmas Tree" and "The Thanksgiving Treasure". I read the books over and over again as a child. My best friend and I would even pretend we were Addie and Carla Mae and get fall bouquets with cattails. I wish that I could order the books. I noticed that "Thanksgiving" is not available. I have 4 daughters and would love for them to read these and have the same wonderful memories that I have. I have "Christmas" video and I watch it over and over again during the season. Thanks, Gail Rock, for creating such heartwarming stories.

This is a great book that teaches you that your enemies can be your friends. Not all of your enemies have to be your friends, but this teaches you some of your enemies can be your friends.
I am 9 yrs old and would recommend it.

The thanksgiving treasure, by Gail Rock is about two people who are enemies for about two years. In the story a girl tries to get her father to be friends with his enemy. But instead of him becoming friends with the enemy his child becomes friends with her fathers enemy. This part of the story takes place before Thanksgiving happens. Then on Thanksgiving the girl wants to invite her dad's enemy to dinner but her dad says no. So she decides to take him Thanksgiving dinner which might be his last. When a man came to the girl's house he told her that her dad's enemy had left her a horse. The father didn't want the horse but the girl wanted it. There is another book that is a sequel to the Thanksgiving Treasure, that Gail Rock has done it is called the Christmas Tree. I liked the Thanksgiving Treasure because it teaches people that you could be friends with your enemies.

From the time I first read "The Thanksgiving Treasure" by Gail Rock in the early 70s as a young girl, I fell in love with Addie Mills. Similarly, I loved "The House Without a Christmas Tree." When I had children of my own, I would read a chapter a night each year about this time and then as they became readers, we would each take a turn reading a chapter. My children are now 15, 17 and 19....too old to share in the tradition with their mama but I will read it again and again and again until there are grandchildren to read it to. Priceless, timeless and sweet. It is books like these that make me long to be a school teacher so I can share the story with more generations of children!

As a teacher, mother,and grandmother, I can't say enough about Gail Rock's The Thanksgiving Treasure. It is a beautiful story that touches the heart, and teaches lessons of love, tolerance, and family pride. There is much to be gained by reading this wonderful story with your child.
