4.0 out of 5 stars A nostalgic trip back to the big bands of the 20's & 30's., January 12, 1999
This review is from: That Band from Indiana (Paperback)
In a wonderfully conversational tone, Charlie Davis takes you back to the late twenties and early thirties to the days when big bands were king. He tells how That Band from Indiana started in the Indiana dance hall circuit, moved through the era of the big lakeside dance palaces and ended up on the "publix" circuit headlining at various Paramount Movie Houses. Throughout the narrative he intertwines names familiar to any music fan, rubbing elbows and performing with the likes of Dick Powell, Hoagy Carmichael, Ethel Merman, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and others. While he occasionally meanders from the point to tell a story, these wanderings are often as entertaining as the original line of thought. By the time you finish, you'll feel like Charlie and the rest of his "joy gang" are old friends. A quick and easy read that takes you back to a by-gone era.
