5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful, Bright, a Great Box Set
This set is a big box of eye candy and I'm so pleased to have it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great memories; commentaries weak
The release of these DVDs bring back some great memories; however, I was let down a bit by Marlo's commentaries. I realize that, forty years on, she has quite a body of work behind her; yet as a fan you wait to hear such things as, "I remember this scene!," or "I remember Ted Bessell did this during shooting this scene...", but she speaks about Ann Marie in the 3rd...

If That Girl was before your time let me refresh your memory. The set includes the pilot episode. In this episode Ann Marie is seen in the big city pursuing her acting career. She is working at a counter when she is spotted by film makers looking for a last minute actress. On her lunch break she decides to look at a desk that is for sale and she crosses paths with a man named Don who is also interested in the desk. They cross paths later in the evening while she is filming a kidnapping scene and he thinks she is being kidnapped for real and he tries to rescue her. Everything works out fine and Ann Marie and Donald become boyfriend and girlfriend.

Although That Girl aired in the 1960's, it really opened the door for women sitcom stars. This show was before Mary Tyler Moore and decades before shows like Murphy Brown, Blossom, Ally McBeal, Ellen,Grace Under Fire and Suddenly Susan. The situations that Ann Marie finds herself in our themes that became common in the Hollywood sitcom. Babysitting woes, minor court cases, problems with parents, and much more.

This is a really great set and one of the best TV on DVD sets Shout has ever released. It's so bright and colorful and full of bonus features. Bonus material includes:

-Original That Girl Pilot Episode
-That Show...That Woman...The Creation Of That Girl with Marlo Thomas
-That Girl promos
-That Girl in New York with Marlo Thomas and Bill Persky
-Audio commentaries with Marlo Thomas and Bill Persky

I am having such a good time watching these shows again. In 1966, I was 11 years old, but I remember loving this show. Yes, the clothes! New York City! Donald! And Marlo Thomas looks fabulous. How pretty she is and the show is hilarious. The packaging on this box set is eye candy and the extras are great. This is how a DVD TV show set should be. My 15 year old daughter is already in love with Ann Marie. And this is the kind of show you can enjoy with your kids. Heck, even my hubby loves this show. A great price for such wonderful memories! Get this NOW!

I am so glad that this series is being released. I have waited for it forever. This, in my opinion, was one of the best shows of the 60's. Ann Marie is a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars That Girl Marlo, March 27, 2006
This review is from: That Girl - Season One (DVD)
Beautiful Marlo Thomas ranks among the most delightful sitcom heroines of all time - she was consistently nominated for the Best Comedy Actress Emmy honor for this series and should have won at least once. I loved this program growing up mainly because Marlo is so appealing in the part as the aspiring actress who can't seem to get a major break. THAT GIRL was one of ABC's few major hits during the 1960's, there were far fewer ABC stations at the time and the best programs from the network were often picked up by NBC or CBS stations and shown in their non-network time slots, this is how I saw the show when I was young. As I grew up and became a fan of old movies, I could see the influence of the classic romantic comedies of Claudette Colbert and Carole Lombard on this show and of course THAT GIRL was a pioneer TV program with a "working girl" heroine. I cannot wait to get this DVD set and hear Marlo gasp once again in her slightly raspy voice "Oh, Donald!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Before Mary Richards we had Ann Marie!!!, September 25, 2006

This is by far the best release of a sitcom from the 60's I've seen yet. (Second only to the Dick Van Dyke Show) Perfectly restored episodes, guides with orignal air dates in the packaging, and plenty of extras, and a great price on top of that make this a bargain for any fan of "That Girl".

The situations are as funny as they've ever been. My wife was never a fan of the show, but she watched a couple episodes with me and was laughing out loud.

The extras include an interview with Marlo about the creation of the show. There is also a short with much of the outdoor shots taken in New York that were woven into the episodes with commentary on how they did that. On top of that, they include the never-aired pilot!!!

The packaging is bright and colorful and of similar quaility to the "Everybody Loves Raymond" sets.

If you were ever a fan of this show, you will not be disappointed with this set, and Amazon has the best price by far.

5.0 out of 5 stars And the winner is...THAT GIRL, September 17, 2006
This review is from: That Girl - Season One (DVD)
If there were an award for best overall presentation of a TV show on DVD, my vote would go to That Girl. The packaging is bright, fun and lovable, just like the show. The graphics under the titles of episodes on each disc are very creative (love the images of Ann and Donald that appear when the disc is first loaded). The bonus features are generous, and the price on Amazon is reasonable. To top it all off, the announcement of the release of the second season (in Nov.) was done in a timely manner--fans don't have to wonder when and if a second season is coming. Well done, Shout Factory!

As for the show itself, the comedy is still fresh and funny with many laugh-out-loud moments. Ann Marie and Donald are adorable--you feel they really exist and I would love to have them as friends. This is a charming and wholesome show recommended for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars That Girl...In Color..., October 12, 2006

Diamonds, Daisies, Snowflakes,
That Girl
Chestnuts, Rainbows, Springtime...
Is That Girl
She's tinsel on a tree...
She's everything that every girl should be!
Sable, Popcorn, White Wine,
That Girl
Gingham, Bluebirds, Broadway...
Is That Girl
She's mine alone, but luckily for you...
If you find a girl to love,
Only one girl to love,
Then she'll be That Girl too...
That Girl!

Oh, yeah...I remember That Girl...maybe not when it first came out, but I do remember the reruns on Los Angeles channel KTTV, channel 11...I must've been like six years old and I was flippin' the knob as fast as I could...remember doing that?...and all of the sudden the television landed on a show with this beautiful girl on it. Like I said, I was only six but I knew a beautiful lady when I saw one and she was definitely beautiful. Little did I know I was forming a lifelong passion for brunettes.

When you watch this show now it was so hokey and so corny, but I think that's what makes it so endearing, just this gentle, sweet innocence going on and there wasn't too much innocence going on in the sixties. People were ripping the blinders off their eyes and seeing things not only as they were, but as they could be. Despite all the bloodshed, the rebellion, the anger, I think the sixties were a very pivotal point in not only the history of the United States, but the whole world. People began to really tune into life at this time. People began to understand that the individual plays a HUGE ROLE in the transformation of the world. But if you asked my dad about the 60s, he'll just say it was all about "dirty, stinky hippies in dire need of a shower." That could be true, too...

But anyway, back to our program...this was a great and wonderful show about a girl struggling to be her own woman...her own person...that in itself is a wonderful premise. Like Shakespeare once said, "To thine ownself be true...." We must learn to be true to ourselves, to our ideals, to our values so we can look at those naysayers in the face and say proudly, "I may fall 1,000 times, but I will still get up..."

The 60s were all about the empowerment of the individual. What happened? Now everyone wants to be the same. It's like we have become too conformed to life...too prepackaged...I go to the mall and everyone wants to look like Brittney Spears or Paris Hilton...those girls are role models?

Excuse me while I barf...

Marlo Thomas was a role model for women 40 years ago and she is still a role model for women...and she is still just as beautiful if not more so. Maybe what this country needs is a good war...yeah, that'll stir things up a bit...oh, wait...sorry...scratch that...maybe what we need are more people who are willing not only to exude passionate individualism, but also sweet and gentle transfomation, as well.

Great Show. Definitely belongs on any serious 60s fan list.
