An Elegant Pathway to Inner Truth,
By Judith Pennington, author of The Voice of the... (Bethlehem, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: God, Is That You? How to Have a Conversation with God-and Really Hear Him (Paperback)
The author did a beautiful job of explaining how to communicate with the divine spark of God in each of us. I really enjoyed hearing her story and the stories of others guided and healed by that communion, as well as her rich, expressive insights into clearing the way to and actually having that conversation. This work was beautifully conceived and written with refreshing clarity, honesty and humor. I was enriched by it, and I believe that it will go far in helping all of us enter this long-awaited Age of Soul.

An inspiring and provocative instruction book,
This review is from: God, Is That You? How to Have a Conversation with God-and Really Hear Him (Paperback)
"God, Is That You?", is an inspirational book that walks the reader through a technique for learning how to talk to and listen to (hear) God's voice. The technique involved two methods so you can use the one that is the most comfortable for you. Several examples of people talking with God are given as she challenges the reader and encourages them to make conversations with God a part of their daily routine. Easy to read, easy to understand and easy to follow, it will provide positive encouragement to many who are struggling to understand what God desires of them.

A book for all religions,
By
This review is from: God, Is That You? How to Have a Conversation with God-and Really Hear Him (Paperback)
I don't think it matters what religion we are, there probably aren't many of us who haven't, at one time or another, wished we could speak to God and have Him answer back. In words that we can understand. In God, Is That You?, author Katharine Giovanni suggests that we can talk to God and have every reason to expect an answer, "in actual words."
We are told in Part I that "This is your golden moment of realization. This is the hope of a better way and even better things yet to come!...You can always go back to them if you wish." So, what do we have to lose in trying to hear God speak to us? Absolutely nothing! Dividing the book into several parts, Giovanni offers the basics of how she began taking this path of talking to God and expecting answers, debunks the myth that God only talks to special people, and gives readers suggestions as to what they might wish to talk to God about. Asserting that conversing with God is just a matter of praying and then waiting for an answer, Giovanni gives us two ways of carrying on these dialogues: 1) Using the written word, with computer or paper and pen, or 2) Using meditation. The steps are simple and easy to follow, and real-life examples abound, just in case you want to see what happens to others who listen to God. Also included are exercises to flex your "listening muscles" and suggestions for further reading and Internet surfing on the subject of talking, and listening, to God's voice. There is nothing far-out or new-agey about God, Is That You? It's a simple matter of allowing God the chance to speak to us, and giving Him the courtesy of listening. I found the book enlightening and uplifting.

Not at all Biblical,

This review is from: God, Is That You? How to Have a Conversation with God-and Really Hear Him (Paperback)
These types of books have become dangerous in that they advocate beliefs that are contrary to scripture. This book makes the bold (and popular) statement that there is no hell. It has become difficult for most in today's world to accept hell so rather than explain it, this book simply eliminates it. One less argument the Christian had to defend to the non-Christians. I also thought the reference to the September 11 attacks was opportunistic and disingenuous.
The issue with these "I Can Hear God, You Can TOO!" books (probably their next title) is that they prey on our fears using the natural abilities of people to self hypnotize. We answer our own questions based on a set a beliefs. It is an self induced form of "Cold Reading" where we just say things to ourselves until something sticks. In the extreme it imitates schizophrenia in that we become practiced in answering ourselves in more complicated ways. As we develop our trust in our supposed new found ability we also assume any errors were do to our own misunderstanding and we quickly explain away any contradiction by "re-asking" for clarification of where we went wrong. The book is hard to read but even harder to swallow. The author is anxious to make our walk with God an "I'm OK, You're OK" relationship. The examples are weak and the example conversations minimalist. I would not even give this book away. UPDATE: I find it typical and deceptive that so many reviewers are publicists. This book is terrible but gets 4-1/2 stars due to phoney reviews. Save your money and your time.

Review: God, is that You? By Katharine C. GiovanniAn avid appreciator of the works of Gregg Braden (The Isaiah Effect: Decoding the Lost Science of Prayer and Prophecy portrays marvelous insight into the operations of this universe) and Sophy Burnham (The Path of Prayer: Reflections on Prayer and True Stories of How it Affects our Lives shows the depth of our need to connect with God), I found Katharine Giovanni's book, God, is that You?, splendidly down-to-earth. The joy in reading different styles of writing lies in one's ability to glean meaningful and personally applicable concepts through slightly altered perspectives. Katharine's book reminds each of us that every individual remains important to our Creator. It grandly opens the door to connection by reminding the reader that any and all types of communication with God are appreciated. This presents an "everyday" approach to prayer where we can "talk" to God without fear and in so doing, we discover that indeed, we are not alone. Her own reflections and those of others in the text bring our emotions and a sense of humility into play. These feelings allow us to remove the barriers that we ourselves have created - ideas on when and how to pray - and the method of free-writing a conversation with God, I suspect, will warmly surprise anyone who undertakes this prayer quest. Marc Gafni, the learned author of Soul Prints, suggests that "God loves a story....let us be the heroes of our own." In Ms. Giovanni's book, we are asked to renew our very personal connection to our loving God. As simplistic as this might sound, the results prove extraordinary. One might find the use of writing questions odd in light of the omniscience of God, but free will explains the freedoms given to man. In addition, writing questions to God allows us to focus our thoughts. Once the door to this magnificent experience of unity is open, you will have succeeded in making yourself available to new possibilities. What more generous love could exist than that of a "creator" who wants his creations to also have that power over their own lives. - Becky Ruff
