5.0 out of 5 stars Guitars That Grab Your Ears By The Throat, September 3, 2007
By
Michael Costa (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires (Audio CD)
No disrespect to any of the previous Megadeth lineups, but this is the heaviest sound I've ever heard from them, and possibly, on any live album by any band. Listening to "That One Night" is like sitting in front of two blazing guitar amps, and seems to be mixed hotter than the audio on the DVD of this show. If you love twenty-ton guitar riffs, this is your record.

Instead of going through the motions of a typical "greatest hits live" CD, these Megadeth classics sound fresh and fierce, making the studio versions, which I love, seem anemic by comparison.

Listen to the opening blitzkrieg of "Blackmail the Universe" and you'll know what I mean. This is full-volume guitar ferocity that goes way beyond previous versions, and it only lets up once, for the acoustic "Coming Home To Argentina." The legendary intro to "Holy Wars" sounds like a knife fight here, and "Reckoning Day" sounds like a construction crew smashing the side of a building.

If you've seen the DVD of this show, then you know Dave and Co. are really inspired by the gonzo Argentine crowd. The fans are so into it that they sing along to the guitar riffs, like a giant collective Beavis. It's an energy that feeds the entire performance.

There is a focus and intensity onstage that you can see in the DVD, and it transfers perfectly to this CD. Dave in particular sounds like someone who has mastered what he does, showing why he's one of the pillars of thrash. He has not mellowed with age, and he sounds as vital as ever.

If you were suspicious of the Megadeth re-mastered (re-recorded?) CDs, this is one you can buy with confidence. It's a musical chainsaw.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Deth" Machine is Stonger than ever!, September 14, 2007
This review is from: That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires (Audio CD)
If you asked me years ago, would I be listening to the best metal live album, in 2007, I would have said no. heck,at one point it looked like we would never see a Megadeth album again. yet Dave has put the best line-up together in Meg History, put out one of the best studio albums from Megadeth "United Aboinations", and now one of the best Metal live albums ever. This band is so tight. They bring so much to the band. They nail the old stuff and kill with the new. The Drover brothers are unbelievable and James is a great addition to the rhythm section. Songs sound heavier than ever. If you are looking for a cd of great riffs and leads, then get this album... and defenitly check them out on Tour..

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Metal Live Album Ever!!!, September 23, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires (Audio CD)
I had heard rumours that this possibly the best metal live album ever, and so I decided to buy it. I had also heard that the sound was mixed better that in DVD. After listening it I realized that the both statiments were true. It wasn't hard for me to listen to the both CDs through twice during the day I got it. "Jet Intro/ Blackmail the Universe" is an amazing opener. Other songs from "The System Has Failed" in this live set are "Die Dead Enough", "Something That I'm Not", and "Kick the Chair". I think that most people have suspicions for the songs like "I'll Be There", "Return to Hangar", "Coming Home to Argentina" and "Die Dead Enough". Still, I think that this live album needs them. The live audience in Buenos Aires is really awesome. They sing great during the songs. Three highlights for the audience are "I'll Be There", "Hangar 18" and "Symphony of Destruction". In Hangar 18 the audience shouts between the solos "Megadeth Megadeth Megadeth Megadeth!" and during the riff of "Sympshony of Destruction" they sing "Megadeth, Megadeth, we love Megadeth". It's great to notice that Megadeth didn't try to make "a greatest hits live album" because that would been terrible. I think that live gigs should been recorded as they are...not trying to give all the audience favourites. This album is perfectly mixed and I (almost) felt like I would been there in Argentina because it sounded so good. This album is defintely better than "Rude Awakening". Dave Mustaine sings almost like in 80's - his voice is amazing! The band plays perfectly - it is great to hear "Reckoning Day" with great drumming. Notice, that there are many opening songs in the beginning of the. There are many live songs that weren't in RA, such as "Skin Of My Teeth", "Set the World Afire", and "I'll Be There". I hope that Megadeth will make a live album soon again. Still, I would love to hear songs from KIMB...at least "Rattlehead" and "Last Rites/Loved to Deth"...
Stars: Set the World Afire, Wake Up Dead, Holy Wars, Kick the Chair, Hangar 18
