Book Description

August 1, 2007
This is a story of obsessive love, uncontrolled passion - and cruel, cynical betrayal set in 16th century Spain. Queen Juana, daughter of Ferdinand and Isabel, sister of Catherine of Aragon, was the mother of Carlos V (Holy Roman Emperor), and grandmother of Philip II. Juana, a remarkable woman of her times, was highly intelligent and talented, had her own strongly held views and opinions, was daring and valiant, was always faithful to her high moral and ethical principles, but at times, was a victim of her strong emotions. A founder of the powerful Hapsburg dynasties of Spain and Austria, she never knew or enjoyed their fortunes. Instead, throughout her long life, she suffered at the hands of three men driven by their insatiable thirst for power. First her husband Philip, Archduke of Austria, a blatant womaniser and political schemer; next, her father who publicly humiliated her and had her imprisoned in an isolated village; and finally, her son Carlos who subjected her to a further thirty years of incarceration and torture. With astonishing fortitude and indomitable spirit Juana endured it all. Her spirited resistance to this lifetime of barbaric persecution earned her, unfairly, the infamous nickname Juana la Loca, Joan the Mad.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Dear Linda, I have just finished reading your book That Other Juana and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. I found it very refreshing to read an account of her life from Juana's point of view as I have always felt that she has been much maligned in the history books and was shut away probably because of her intellectual challenge to male authority rather than madness. Thank you very much, I shall certainly look out for any further books by you. --G. Grason

Dear Linda, I sincerely believe this is an excellent work; a wonderful historical novel and historically accurate. Juana la Loca is a fascinating character and That Other Juana portrays her brilliantly: her life, her feelings, her people. The scene with the meeting of Juana, Charles, Leonor and Catalina is fantastic: I lived the scene as if I was there. You can be proud of your achievement. I can't wait for your next book about Juana's son, Charles V. --J. Sanmarti --J. Sanmarti

As far as I am qualified to judge, That Other Juana, the sad story of Juana la Loca, has been impeccably researched for this novel, without that research weighing down the depiction of the characters or their reasons for behaving as they do. Juana herself comes over as a passionate, intelligent woman: headstrong and occasionally unable to foresee the consequences of her actions, but in no way the insane virago of tradition. Instead, Linda Carlino presents us with a sympathetic and plausible account of a great injustice, for Juana La Loca was betrayed in turn by her parents, her husband and her son. In this portrait of a shamefully neglected historical figure, That Other Juana is in the mould of Anya Seton s Katherine , and from me, there can be no higher praise. Catherine Bott (Presenter, the Early Music Show, BBC Radio 3) --Catherine Bott (Presenter, the Early Music Show, BBC Radio 3)

Queen Juana I of Spain (Juana la Loca), the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella has always had a bad press, so it is refreshing to read a work that shows that the sister of Catherine of Aragon was far from a lunatic nonentity. A woman who was instrumental in creating the powerful Hapsburg houses of Spain and Austria, she defied family cruelty and betrayal to stay true to her own beliefs and principles. This is an historical novel which looks beyond the glamour of courts and crowns to the harsh realities of royal life - especially if you were a princess with a mind of your own. --J. McTaggart

About the Author

Linda Carlino has had a lifelong passion for history and historical fiction. When she visited Spain for the first time twenty years ago she became fascinated with its XV and XVI century history. Since then she has travelled extensively in Spain and studied for long periods in many of its most prestigious public and private libraries. In August 2007 VeritasPublishing published her debut historical novel That Other Juana (Queen Juana I of Spain) and in 2010 it will be published in Portugal by Editorial Presença. Her second novel about Juana s son, A Matter of Pride (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) was published in Spring 2008 and Wives & Other Women about her grandson (Philip II of Spain) in late 2008, thus completing this Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy. Linda is currently working on another historical novel, an intriguing mystery involving some of the characters in Wives & Other Women.

Update
On January 10, 2012 the second book of Linda Carlino's A Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy, "A Matter of Pride", was published in Portugal titled "Uma Questão de Orgulho" - A Question of Pride.
In February 2012 the first book of the trilogy,"That Other Juana", (Juana la Loca) will be published in Brazil titled "Joana, a Louca".

Biography
Linda was born in a small mining village at the southern edge of the Durham coalfield in the Northeast of England. My family was quite remarkable for that time and place: they loved books and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Not surprising that after college a successful and rewarding teaching career followed.
Linda had a lifelong passion for history and historical fiction but writing as a second career was never planned or sought. But a five week independent tour of Spain in 1988 was a life-changing event. Apart from all the obvious attractions of that glorious country it was the history, particularly the historical connections with England that caught her attention: She was hooked. She wanted to know more, much more. She studied Spanish and then started reading Spanish sources. Many exciting days were to follow in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, other public and private libraries in Spain, and the British Library in London

Books
In August 2007 VeritasPublishing published her debut historical novel That Other Juana (Queen Juana I of Spain) and in October 2009 it was published in Portugal by Editorial Presença. Her second novel about Juana's son, A Matter of Pride (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) was published in 2008 and Wives & Other Women about her grandson (Philip II of Spain) in late 2008, thus completing her Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy.
In 2008 she was elected a Full Member of The Society of Authors.
In January 2011, her last novel, "Ana" (Ana of Austria) was published posthumously.

Foreign Books
In October 2009 the first book of A Hapsburg Trilogy," That Other Juana", was published in Portugal and is being marketed worldwide with the title "Joana, a Louca" (Joan the Mad) with a stunning cover - a contemporary portrait of Juana as a young girl. In February 2010 the Portuguese publisher contracted to publish the other two books of A Hapsburg Trilogy, "A Matter of Pride" and "Wives & Other Women", during 2010 - 2011.

All of Linda's books, paperbacks and Kindle Books, are available from both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk
