This is the BEST book!,
By A Customer
This review is from: So That Others May Live (Hardcover)
I found this book probably about 4 or 5 years ago, and since then I've read it about 20 times. So That Others May Live is really one of those hard to put down books. It captures the tragedy, heroism, compassion, and often humor of what Caroline Hebard and her dogs have done and still continue to do. All in all... it is one of the best books I've ever read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves dogs, or has any interest in Search and Rescue work.

An Inspiration,

This review is from: So That Others May Live: Caroline Hebard & Her Search-And-Rescue Dogs (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book when it first came out and it totally changed my life. I could not quit thinking about Caroline Hebard and how she had given her life real meaning by combining her love of dogs with helping others. I did some more research and got a labrador retrevier to train for search and rescue. Along the way I decided that I needed to be better prepared to handle an emergency situation and I took classes to become an EMT. That led me to volunteer with a volunteer fire & rescue company. Although I trained my dog, he developed seiures and I have never used him for search and rescue. He has become my loyal companion and protector. I continue my work as a dedicated member of my Fire & Rescue Company and my life truly has meaning. All because of this book.

This book inspired me to become a dog trainer. I carefully watch for the S&R dogs now at disaster sites and think of this book. I can now empathize with the joys and hardship of this work and hope to be a contributing part of this someday. Excellent book.

A lovely animal story,

What a great story of wonderful animals and a large hearted women. She and her dogs surely gave the world a great view of what America's best looks like. How many families across the world and within our country have been greatly assisted by her and the groups she was with. This is not only a good story it is a saga of heart felt charity by some of the most wonderful people we have to offer. I am so very proud to know we are of the same clan, Americans. If you love your dogs don't miss this book.

The good and bad times of search and rescue,
By A Customer
This review is from: So That Others May Live (Hardcover)
Caroline is a determined, hard worker that doesn't let her being a women stop her or slow her down from disagreeing, or going against some very important and powerful men. This story insights the up points and down points of search and rescue. It shows some of the natural disaster in which her and her team search through rubble to save strangers' lives, and their struggle to be able to search in the countries that are enemies to the U.S.A.. The book also shows the psychological things the people and their dogs go through, and the problems they bring home to their families.

this is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read (all 3 times) No one who reads this book will walk away without an admiration for the dedication and love Caroline Hebard puts into her work and her dogs. I can not say enough about how much this book is a "must read". Caroline, if you ever check out theses reviews, I am a huge fan. Few have achieved as much as you.

This book speaks to the magic between a dog and its owner,

Clark Kent, move over. This book isn't just about dogs that do incredible live-saving search and rescue work. This book is about the woman who would not take "no" for an answer when she wanted to pioneer the way for women in the search and rescue field, the paramedic field, and the fire fighting field. Caroline is a woman whose power, compassion and contribution are ironically understated- which is in line with her determined and focused personality. A mother, a life saving professional, and a dog trainer, she weaves her gripping (true) story in a way that will engage even the most aloof non-dog-loving reader. After reading her book I was inspired to call my local SAR organization and volunteer to be a "lost victim" for training practice sessions for their dogs

A Very Personal History of an Adrenaline Junky,
By Rick B. (St. Petersburg, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: So That Others May Live (Hardcover)
No, it will not win a Pulitzer Prize, but if you like dogs it will make you laugh and make you cry. Hebard's co-author specializes in Sunday supplement work and it shows. The writing is typical of a human-interest newspaper feature-this is not a criticism, merely an observation. This biography is not intended as a balanced history of the rescue dog movement in America-it is a very personal document about Hebard and her animals. All others, including her husband, neighbors, co-workers, and children, are shadowy background figures. Read the book for pleasure, escape, or even inspiration. The dogs in the book are not heroes-to call them that would be anthropomorphizing them. They are simply playing the game they have been trained to play, a game that makes them feel good much more often than it makes them feel bad. The same could be said for Caroline Hebard-a self-confessed adrenaline junky.
