Many books speak of hand sewing. This book teaches the reader not only what to do, but why. What type of thimble do you use? You may want to change. Most thimbles are actually harmful to the hand. The author shows you why, and what to do about it. What material do you use? What is the thread count? These are important considerations when hand stitching. How many stitches to the inch do you do? 8? 10? 12? Learn how to consistently hand stitch 12 -14 per inch. It's easy, once you know how.

I cannot recommend this book enough. If a beginner, it provides a solid foundation. If you are experienced, this will take you to the next level. A worthwhile investment.

I took Didi's hand quilting class last year & have been waiting for this book. The importance of the correct materials & tools can't be over emphasized. All needles aren't created equal, ditto for thimbles & thread. Learn about quilting & ergonomics. Quilting shouldn't be painful or cause injury. I highly recommend both this book & the class. I'm happy that I can now dispense with all those hand written class notes.

A beautiful book, but the title is misleading because this is really a general overview of quilting tools rather than a concentrated focus on hand quilting. Of the twelve or so chapters in the book, only two actually attempt to teach hand quilting stitch techniques. The rest of the book is on choosing fabric, batting, thimbles, markers etc....things that apply universally to all quilting, not just hand quilting. Beautiful photos, mostly of appliqued quilts. Twice the book referenced a photo demonstrating a technique, yet neither the page nor the photo was even in the book. And for some of the quilting techniques discussed (like trapunto) the content was so mediocre that you came away with not knowing anything more than you did before you read what was written! The back of the book has an appendix of quilting patterns, but they appear more to be simple applique patterns than quilting designs--and are poorly drawn (look as if they were drawn by a preschooler--a bear, a heart, a star etc.).Seemed quite out of place considering the complicated designs shown elsewhere in the book. Over all, I thought the book too pricey for what it contained, and if you know anything at all about quilting, most of this book will be review for you.

Second edition, a sequel to her mother's fine book. The book is a perfect companion to her DVD. It is amazing how much one can learn from this fine quilter and teacher.

There is much valuable information here and it is clear that the author has made serious, detailed, technical study of quilting arts. It is also clear that the author has products to sell and is not reticent about plugging them. (Including what looks like a "rigged" product comparison on page 67) I learned quite a bit, but not how to make the perfect stitch. Photos and descriptions of actual stitching are confined to 5 out of 178 pages. Given the sales pitches scattered within these pages, I can't help but suspect that information was withheld for inclusion in the author's rather expensive DVD. As a result, the book did not furnish enough "how to" actual stitching information for my needs.

The book is exquisitely poduced and well written. It includes many photos of impressive quilts (although most not my style). The author pays homage to her late mother through sincere praise and exhibits of her work that speak for themselves. Both mother and daughter are exhibit a gift for the art and teaching it to others. For the next edition I would suggest reversing the elements of the title. "The Secrets of Fine Hand Quilting" would be more descriptive of its content.

This book not only tells/shows you how to quilt, but takes you thru the whole process and tells you about each part and what each part is about, from choosing a needle to choosing thread to choosing fabric type and batting. It is a terrific book and well thoughtout and interesting. It covers it all.

Easy to read, great pictures, and wonderful advice make this a must have for all interested in hand quilting/stitching. It is so easy to hold while practicing the stitches, but a spiral binding would have been better. The price at Amazon is reasonable and the shipping time was short, even though I was anxiously awaiting its arrival.

If you are a hand quilter, this is a "must have." Dierdra McElroy is the daughter of the famous Roxanne McElroy of needle and hand quilting fame. She is also a physical therapist. This combination gives her the ability to explain how to hand quilt so the end result is lovely and your hands are still functioning without pain.
