Book Description

Shane Halpert doesn't have much longer to live. Each time he moves, pain sears through his limbs. Each time he talks, his throat burns as though he’s swallowed a cauldron of acid. Each time he takes in a lungful of air, his chest feels like it will explode. His only hope is to escape into an imaginary world he has created. A world that he calls That Special Place.

About the Author

Vincent Bivona  is the author of BRYCE, Second Coming, and The Journal of Peter Rubin ("A controversial visual-e-book the likes of which you've never seen before"). His favorite genres to write include horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, and mysteries. And as long as you keep reading, he promises to keep writing. Actually . . . that's not entirely true. He plans to keep writing anyway. But let's face it, he thinks it'd be nice if you read, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars An original very clever and suspenseful plot February 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I think that the plot in this very short well-written tale is original and, as the author states in his after-word, it causes readers to think about the use of the imagination. It reminds me of a Star Trek episode where Spock takes the prior captain of the Enterprise to a special place where, although his body is ruined, he is able to live in his imagination in a pleasurable way with the person he wants to live with. However, Bivona carries the idea further. While in the "special place," the person is able to do things and transport what he does to the real world. And a person can spend many years in the "special place" while only a short time passes in the real world.

In this story, a boy suffers greatly because of the loss of a loved one and discovers that he can avoid the loss of the loved one by going to the "special place." Now he is an adult and is dying of cancer. Can he use the "special place" to help himself?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad & Sweet & I Knew it Complete... November 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed reading this story. Like trying to remember the words of an old song, an ailing man has to find his way back to a make-believe place he knew as a child.

The author did a great job coming up with a tale of what a man- a husband and father- will do to keep a promise to those he loves.

This book was a very nice and interesting journey into the imagination. The author was able to create a quick and easy to read book, you can't put it down. Read his other stuff too.

A lovely collection of short stories. It is great for those times when you don't want to commit to a novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars That Special Place October 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A wonderfully original short story. It was a portrayal of a way to cope with insistent pain, but also to prolong life in a world of the mind's making. Who's to say we aren't all doing that every day? If it had continued it could have continued to intersperse the imaginary with short bits of the real until there is the final release in both worlds. A bright world created by the mind would be an intriguing tale to read.
Details cannot be given without spoilers, so readers can judge for themselves the story's merits.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fourth free story read on the Kindle Fire April 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There isn't anything wrong with Bivona's "That Special Place", but it does have the feel of a writing exercise. Part of it may be that the 'fortress of imagination' is repeatedly and only referred to as "That Special Place". Part of it may be the over indulgence in descriptive on the early portion of the story. It all seems a little simple, which can be fine. But here it feels rushed.
Not bad. But I am not sure I would have paid for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short of pluses January 29, 2014

Not enough plot development. Little character development. Amusing but not something I would re-read. The ending is predictable and not very plausible

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very good October 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story is weird. There's very little build up, and I was lost. The idea needed more substance than what the author brought to the table.
