pretty much, this ep kick started the small indianapolis metalcore band known as haste the day. not many people, or some of my friends like or listen to them, but i do. i like them because their music speaks for itself, encouraging, and basically speaking about how God impacts one's life. this ep is basically a love poem to Jesus Christ by Jimmy Ryan. his 5 + min. tracks show Jimmy shrieking out to Jesus Christ, while the instruments are at its' low/ mellodic keys, talk about talent. and then Substance has all the instruments strumming it's hardest, and Jimmy Ryan with singer/ drummer Devin Chaulk crying out to God for forgivness, and help. This EP is an inspiration, and so good, that no music stores carry them. Online purchases only.

One Of My Favourite CDs of all time. Not a good representation of their sound now... but a VERY underrated CD in my opinion

Two years before the release of Burning Bridges and three before When Everything Falls, the phrase "haste the day" was primarily heard in old church hymns. Any other mention of the phrase was probably heard describing the rising metalcore act from central Indiana. "That They May Know You", an excerpt from John 17:3, was not only the title to Haste the Day's debut EP, it was the inspiration behind it. The cd was independently released and sold only at shows for the most part, however the quality of both the music and the lyrics announced the coming of a band void of all the cliche aspects that are so prevalent in today's scene. The EP starts out with a soft, slow guitar intro and gains speed as the track progresses. Towards the end of the song, the listener is already excited to hear more. That 'more' comes immediately from the hulking metalcore anthem, Substance. Listening on further and further into the cd, it is quite evident that this EP was sure to become an instant classic. Moving from soft and emotional parts to intricate displays of brutal drum blasts, technical guitar parts, and piercing vocals, this cd provides a little bit for every preference of hard music. Influences from great bands such as ZAO, Living Sacrifice, and The Dillinger Escape Plan are all clear in this release. Though it differs in the style of the two latest releases by Haste the Day, this cd built the musical resume that has grown into what it is today.

Bottom line, this CD/EP is a masterpiece and is obviously one of the most underrated releases out there today.

I first heard HTD about a year before Burning Bridges came out, they played at my church a couple times and all they had was this EP. I think they're following two cd's are completely monotonous and this EP remains their only original album that isn't straight chugging, double bass, and a sing-song chorus. Don't get me wrong, I saw them twice at Cornerstone but I can never remember the difference between the new stuff. 'Dry Season' was the first time I experienced Metal-core and 'Substance' on the second album is weaker than on this EP. All in all, I'm not sure what Jimmy is talking about on their newer albums but this one is straight up what he felt and the band has always been an amazing performance band.

Ok,I love Haste The Day.Burning Bridges and When Everything Falls are two amazing cds.This One isnt as heavy as those to.There are a few songs that kicks it up.Most of them are sad and not what you would expect from haste the day.
