Standing by an open window in his study, Sir Maurice Lawes sees a gendarme beaten to death and the killer, who also sees Lawes, escape in a car. The next evening, the residents hear a shattering scream from Janice Lawes when she finds her father murdered. Chief Inspector Garon of the French police and private investigator Dermot Kinross are puzzled as to who would find to kill the kindly Lawes; was it divorcée Eve Atwood whose bloodstained nightdress had been found by the police; or the son of the house, Toby, who had been secretly robbing his father to close the lips of his blackmailing mistress; or a case of robbery with violence, as a valuable necklace had been stolen from Sir Maurice's famous collection; or the burglar who feared Sir Maurice had seen him kill the gendarme? ...That Woman Opposite ( City After Midnight )

Format: DVD
At a seaside town on the French coast, a series of robberies occurs. An English lord (Wilfrid Hyde White) thinks he recognizes the man who committed the robberies but he is murdered before he can make a positive identification. When his son's (Jack Watling) fiancee, a wealthy American (Phyllis Kirk), is accused of the murder, an insurance investigator (Dan O'Herlihy) sets out to prove her innocence. Based on the mystery writer John Dickson Carr's THE EMPEROR'S SNUFF BOX, the plot is too contrived and full of too many coincidences to make for a fully satisfactory murder mystery and despite the intentional red herrings, it's not all that difficult to figure out whodunit. Directed by Compton Bennett (1950's KING SOLOMON'S MINES). With Petula Clark in a non singing role as the murder victim's daughter, William Franklyn and Margaret Withers. Released in the U.S.A. under the title CITY AFTER MIDNIGHT.

The Renown DVD via Great Britain is a nice B&W full frame (1.33) transfer.
