5.0 out of 5 stars The Velvet Master
This is Mel Torme at his absolute peak. "That's All" is a stunning, silky smooth, all-ballads album that showcases Mel's flawless diction, phrasing, and his ability to emotionally interpret the inner core of any song. I keep on coming back to this album because it has so much to offer. Twenty-four tracks including "The Christmas Song," but Torme's sensitive,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Singing Is Great, Arrangements Make It Almost Unlistenable
I am a big fan of Torme from his latter years. To listen to this CD after listening to his work on Concord is a revelation.

The singing is great, the songs are top-notch. But the musicians and arrangements are putrid. One can get diabetes from the sugar in them. It is as if Mersey (the arranger) had a quota to put every effect and every instrument into...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Velvet Master, March 15, 2005
This review is from: That's All (Audio CD)
This is Mel Torme at his absolute peak. "That's All" is a stunning, silky smooth, all-ballads album that showcases Mel's flawless diction, phrasing, and his ability to emotionally interpret the inner core of any song. I keep on coming back to this album because it has so much to offer. Twenty-four tracks including "The Christmas Song," but Torme's sensitive, understated offering of "I've Got You Under My Skin" gives new levels of meaning to a ballad that is not easy to do justice to - unless you're Sinatra. "My Romance" and "Hang on to Me" are incredibly beautiful renditions of songs that require a superb vocalist like Torme to do justice to. This is not an album for Torme's legions of jazz fans, but it is an essential purchase if you are at all serious about building your Torme collection.

this is the mel torme that his fans and all who hear him in the future, will remember. the smooooth voice and stick to the melody style with very little jazz variations. the selections on this cd should appeal to the purist standards listener. the selections are well grouped to flatter the performer and treat the listener to a sentimental journey. wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars MEL TORME - GREAT VOICE - GREAT SONGS - THAT'S ALL !!, September 19, 2005
This review is from: That's All (Audio CD)
Mel Torme...WHAT A VOICE ! All the other reviews say exactly what I would say. This album is overflowing with the kind of music that plays well where ever it's shared...it is "adult" romantic music, meant to be played over and over again between lovers and lovers of music. NO ONE could hold a note or a candle to Mel Torme. This CD has some of his VERY BEST on it. A HUGE BIG FIVE STAR RECOMMENDATION !! While his body of work is vast, (there are many other CDs out there) this particular CD is a GREAT compilation of his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars MEL AT HIS BEST!, January 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: That's All (Audio CD)
Mel in his prime (1964). Lush strings back Mel's velvet voice. No jazzy arrangements or show boating. Mel sings these first rate ballads by Rogers & Hart, Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Vanheusen/Cahn and others, straight and beautifully. "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", "Thats All", "My Romance", "Isn't It A Pity" & "The Nearness Of You" are some of the standout songs and Mel'sversions of these songs are probobly the best ever recorded by anyartist. The CD contains an additional 12 bonus tracks. Although there not bad, they don't live up to original album. The original album alone, however, is well worth the price of the CD. If you only want one Mel Torme CD or for that matter, only one romantic CD, THIS IS THE ONE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine work from a superior singer, October 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: That's All (Audio CD)
Less jazz oriented than many of his other albums, but a blast to listen to. "That's All" is a ballad album, with the exception of "Haven't We Met," which swings hard. One might wish that during the course of his career, Torme had done more straightforward swingers like this, because he's just so good at it here. Some of the album has the slight latin tinge that was popular in the early to mid 1960's, but it's unobtrusive. The Robert Mersey arrangements are generally pretty good, also. For example, the intro to "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" is haunting and fine.

This album is an excellent introduction to Torme.

Mel Torme can take just about any ballad and wrap you up in it completely. Whether it's little gems like "The Folks Who Live On The Hill" or Torme's own venerable warhorse, "The Christmas Song," that voice caresses you like...well, like velvet fog. Everything on this CD is worth playing over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Shining Gem!!, May 27, 2008
This review is from: That's All (Audio CD)
Mel Tormé sings and shines on this CD. The songs, love songs and ballads, are all beautifully arranged and lovingly played, and the remastering allows all the warmth and loveliness of the backing players to sparkle. But it is Mel's impeccable sensibilities and exceptional sensitivity as a singer that bring the most beauty to this recording. My personal favorite, "The Folks That Live On The Hill" is paced at a slower tempo than usual (as are most of the songs on this CD), allowing Mel and the Robert Mersey arrangement develop a fragile beauty from which a nostalgic, reflective emotion emerges.

This recording's tenor is mostly a slow, warm, soft ride through some of the most memorable songs and ballads in The Great American Songbook. The distinctive character of each song allows Mel inimitable treatment of each, showing his depth, range and versatility. With songwriters such as Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer, the tunes are of definitive pedigree. And Mel Tormé, their definitive singer, brings each of them to their fullest, finest light.

Here are the wonderful love songs from previous years sung in a voice so mellow and smooth that the harsh world disappears. The recording is solid, and the voice is true. This is classy music revived for a world confronted with noise. It is truly a stop-and-feel-the-romance recording to be shared with one you love.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'd Better Love Him, July 2, 2005
This review is from: That's All (Audio CD)
"Haven't We Met", the hard swinging "You'd Better Love Me", and "One in a Lifetime" will blow you away! "I Know Your Heart" is fantastic and swings hard and fast as well. The slow midtempo latin stuff gets you in the mood in a hurry. Buy this album, a classic!
