Wow! (As Usual),

Has Dean ever recorded a bad song? Evidently, NO!When lying in bed on cold, rainy nights this is great. There are the classic Martin standards: That's Amore, Volare, Sway, Memories Are Made Of This & You're Nobody Till Somebody loves You. But in addition, there are many, often forgotten performances, which are Dean Martin at his best. Dean swings (as good as ever) on Just In Time, If Love Is Good To Me, Standing On The Corner & Canadian Sunset (forget Andy Williams' version), while remaining calm, and not over-singing anything. But then, that's always the magic of Dean's singing. Then there are slower Italian love songs - don't let that put you off! Often you think slow tunes will be a real wah wah part of the collection, but these arn't like that: Come Back To Sorrento, Just Say I Love Her, Vieni Su, Innamorata & Arrevederci Roma are beautiful, and are perfectly suited for entertaining at the dinner table, or almost any use. The overall mood of this collection is great, keeping just the perfect mix of faster songs and slower, ballady ones, all chosen from Dean's Capitol Records recordings - which are some of Dean's best recordings. Well worth the buy. You'll love it weather you like Dean Martin or not.

A Rare Dean Martin Treasure!,

If you can find this elusive CD...Buy it! I really wasn't a Dean Martin fan prior to the purchase of this CD, but his smooth, effortless sound and jazzy, relaxed beat drew me in. Whether you're in the mood to sing it, swing it, or just sit back and listen to it, this compilation is perfect for anything. I prefer this album in particular because of the version of "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You." His sound is more laid back and his voice just melts into the music. It's FANTASTIC!

This is a fine single CD compilation of songs performed with genuine passion by the great Dean Martin. Dean makes these songs sound wonderful using his voice which was truly an instrument that conveyed all the subtle nuances of the lyrics of each and every song.
The CD starts with a ballad Dean often sang, "That's Amore." The music fits in perfectly with Dean's singing; that accordion really adds to the beauty of the tune. "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" absolutely exudes elegance in Dean's capable hands; he never lets go of a single superfluous note and the music is very well done. Listen also for Dean to outdo even himself on "Volare;" he never sounded better! "Sway" and "Return to Me" with its female chorus backup shine equally bright when Dean performs them with a type of panache only he could display. "Memories Are Made of This" is easy on the ear; Dean delivers this to perfection--and beyond! The backup singers sound great--not that Dean ever really needed backup, but wow, how they harmonize! It all holds its own very well. "Come Back to Sorrento" is beautiful; and I really like "Just in Time" which features Dean swinging gently to make this number special. "I'm Yours" impresses me with Dean's singing and those strings; and there's yet another gem in ""Hey Brother, Pour the Wine" with that backup chorus. "Just Say I Love Her (Dicintencello Vuie)" is beautiful even if it's not a number I hear too often from Dean; and there are other special tunes in "If Love Is Good to Me" with a classic Latin treatment; "Standing on the Corner" which I always liked and "Vieni Su (Say You Love Me Too)" which has Dean Martin crooning at his very best! The strings and more are very well used in the arrangement for "Vieni Su (Say You Love Me Too)," too. Dean makes "Innamorata (Sweetheart)" a total masterpiece as the strings and more play sweetly; and he performs "Arrivederci Roma" with so much genuine feeling that you just know he's singing straight from his heart. "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" from "My Fair Lady" showcases Dean Martin's ability to carry a show tune well; and "Canadian Sunset" has Dean squarely front and center--which is right where he belongs! "Pretty Baby" is a playful, amorous number; and the CD ends strong with Dean Martin performing "My One and Only Love" with a sublime late 50s/early 60s Latin arrangement. Dean Martin never disappointed his adoring fans; and when you hear this album you'll know why! I agree with people who write that you'll enjoy this even if you're not a major Dean Martin fan; it makes a great CD for anyone's Dean Martin collection, too. |
