1.0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTING - UNINSPIRED AIMLESS, NOT BLUES, MUSIC
Before buying this cd I knew that Jimmy Thackery could be an outstanding rock blues guitarist and, from Amazon reviewers, I thought that David Raitt had a very good singing voice. Therefore, I excitedly looked forward to the arrival of That's It! However, after receiving That's It! and listening to it a few times, I am very disappointed. The vocals, guitar playing, and...

Bonnie Raitt isn't the only Raitt sibling with talent, her brother David is a talented blues vocalist in his own right as he proves on this new release with Jimmy Thackery. David and Jimmy were teenage friends, and it was David who gave his friend Jimmy Thackery a Buddy Guy album that set Jimmy on the road to becoming one of the hottest guitar players in the blues/rock scene today. As for David he spent some time playing upright bass with Bonnie in the Northeast and later when he moved to the West coast he played in a band with the Ford brothers-Mark and Patrick. Thirty years later the two highschool friends reunite to record an album for Blue Rock'It Records produced by Patrick Ford.

That's It features David Raitt-vocals, Jimmy Thackery-Guitar, Dewayne Pate-bass, Ron E. Beck-drums, David Mathews-keyboards, Mic Gillette-trumpet & trombone, and John Lee Saunders-saxophones. The songs on That's It cover a wide variety of blues from Roosevelt Sykes' Driving Wheel, Otis Rush's It Takes Time, Mike Bloomfield's Me, and a really cool cover of I'd Rather Be Blind, Cripple, And Crazy. Jimmy Thackery only sings on one track as he growls his way through Howlin' Wolf's How Many More Years.

For me the highlights of this album are the original songs by Raitt and Thackery. They show how versatile the two are at writing and performing. David's vocals are smooth and easy on the ear whether he's belting out a blues/rock tune or laying back on a rhythm & blues groove, and Jimmy's guitar playing is as wicked as ever with heaps of soul and stinging lead breaks. An outstanding album and highly recommended.

The rare upbeat blues album that features outstanding vocals (David Raitt -- brother of Bonnie), a premier guitar virtuoso (Jimmy Thackery), tight rhythms, orginality, and excellent production. All 13 tracks are skillful winners.

I have listened to this CD so often that I can sing the words to the songs. I never tire of playing it. Every song is unique and distinctive. Jimmy's guitar playing is at its best and I have just about all of his CDs. David's vocals are a pleasure to listen to. If they ever do another CD together, and I hope that they do, I would buy it without a second thought. They ought to tour together. If they came to my area, I would pay top dollar to see them perform.

5.0 out of 5 stars thats its and thats right, December 31, 2000

one of the best cds from front to back full of mosrlt originals with a few covers. david raitts vocals are superb and this is the best guitar work if heard in a long time jimmy thackery plays the blues/funk/rockin blues with the most passion of his career. my favorite song is a cover of otis rush "it takes time" that smokes with fire, bonnie raitt does b/vocals on two tracks.cds consists of uptempo blues with horns and also has smokey blues.

Both these gentlemen have a long history and are very talented. You will not be dissappointed with this CD. If you ever get a chance to see either of them perform it will be time and money well spent.

1.0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTING - UNINSPIRED AIMLESS, NOT BLUES, MUSIC, November 19, 2010
This review is from: That's It (Audio CD)
Before buying this cd I knew that Jimmy Thackery could be an outstanding rock blues guitarist and, from Amazon reviewers, I thought that David Raitt had a very good singing voice. Therefore, I excitedly looked forward to the arrival of That's It! However, after receiving That's It! and listening to it a few times, I am very disappointed. The vocals, guitar playing, and songs sound exactly like both David Raitt and Jimmy Thackery are neither energized nor inspired. They certainly do not energize or inspire me! The songs themselves on That's It! might be some forms of R and B or funk or something else. Who knows? What I do know is that only a couple of the songs on That's It! truly sound like the blues. (One might call That's It! "roadhouse blues", but neither performer exudes enough energy or excitement to use the "roadhouse blues" term properly.) What I also know is that I'll never again reach for That's It! to place the cd in my cd player. That's It! is such a flawed expression of the blues that there will always be a better example of the blues or rock blues that I'll want to hear first. Rather aimless cds like That's It! cause me to be a bit angry because such a disappointing experience as I've had with this cd, including both the time and the money I've wasted, makes me question, for just a moment, the life-long commmitment I've made to listening to and collecting great music. I'm also very disappointed by reviewers who give high evaluations to cds because they have no clear understanding about what truly is genuine high-quality music. My informed and strong advice to you is to forget about purchasing this cd.

John
