Julia's DVD debut,
By
This review is from: Julia Fordham - That's Live (DVD)
Having been a long time fan it is wonderful having a souvenir of a concert performance of one of pop music's most distinctive voices of the past 17 years or so. The DVD sounds fabulous with a surround set up. The Dolby 5.1 track is much more realistic and emphasizes her voice to maximum effect. The video is fairly standard and seemed a bit grainy on my display but that is a minor quibble. Julia herself is in excellant voice although she seemed a bit nervous as compared to her live performances which I have witnessed. The song selection is weighted to her recent album, "That's Life", but her most popular tracks from her earlier albums are also interspersed. Any fan of sophisticated female pop-jazz stylings should try this out. One listen and you will be a fan forever.

This review is from: Julia Fordham - That's Live (DVD)
Just because no one appears to have done it, here's a track listing for the dvd:
1. Falling Forward 2. Lock and Key 3. Girlfriend 4. Foolish Thing 5. Porcelain 6. Lovin' You 7. Roadside Angel 8. Concrete Love 9. Perfect Me 10. Wake Up With You (The I Wanna Song) 11. Jump 12. Sugar 13. Love 14. Happy Ever After 15. Stay 16. More Than I Can Bear 17. Manhattan Skyline 18. Where Does the Time Go? 19. (Love Moves in) Mysterious Ways 20. I'm Sorry But... Four out of the twenty songs are from her latest ("That's Life") - strictly numbers-wise, the list is more skewed towards "Concrete Love" than any of her other albums. Anyways, just get it, and bask in the golden, velvet glow...

I think you should buy this,

This performance is amazing. Julia Fordham has been one of my favorites for years, ever since "Porcelain" hit the charts. Yes, it's true that her pitch wanders a bit, but this is to be expected. I doubt that she does enough live performances to keep her voice in perfect shape. Elton John is the same, listen to "Live in Australia". You just need to feel this performance instead of critiquing it with a pitch meter. And then, brother, you are in for a treat. She twists and bends to wrench every bit out of every note. Her enthusiasm is infectious, she smiles all the time. She looks like she's absolutely in the moment. The band rocks. The bass line is nice and heavy but the vocals come through clear as a bell. Great mixing, in my opinion. I'm lucky I bought this.

Disappointing,

First, I am an enormous Julia Fordham fan. I consider her songwriting to be second to none. Her album Porcelain is one of the most sublime pop albums ever crafted IMHO. Unfortunately, this live recording does not hold up. The most disappointing aspect of all unfortunately is Julia's voice. There are serious pitch problems on almost every song on this album. If it were simply an occasional slip up it would not bother me. I found this to be very distracting from the overall enjoyment of the music. The performances are also not very inspiring. I probably will not be listening to this again.

I would say her voice is just wonderful and the songs were just perfect. I have been a fan of hers, from long time ago. She is a great singer, and if you have an a/v receiver and set the audio DTS option, you will feel yourself like been there and really enjoy her performance. One thing though is that being herself a great singer, I would say she will be better off with just videos than this concert. You have to like her a lot (like me), so you will not get bored with this concert. I wish I could get a DVD with her videos.

I have been a Julia Fordham fan for many years, have all her albums, and have seen her live twice.
This DVD concert features songs from her whole career and Julia is accompanied by a band consisting of some of the top players in Los Angeles. She and the band are having a great time and put on great performances. If you already a fan of Julia, this DVD is a must. If you are not, you will be after seeing it. She has an incredible voice with a huge range, she writes great songs and the music is pop music for adults. Your kids might not be interested. Highly recommended.

New Queen of Jazz,

Julia' absolutely intoxicating jazzy voice was the first thing the drew me to her music. Her lounge piano melodies are a masterpiece and she has a style that shines on other great female singers such as Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday. This album is lovely but I just found out that Julia Fordham has a new album out called China Blue and it's available on the site called NovaTunes.com. I actually just lisened to the entire album on there and it's amazing. If you love this album, go listen to China Blue. It'll blow you away.

She is awesome in this concert. I often feel that performers are more moving live and this is no exception. Julia gives a truly inspirational concert and I'm glad she decided to record this one!

Not only is Julia one of the most underrated artists in the last century, but she is one of those few who is able to be even better live than on CD. If you are not fortunate enough to see Julia live, this DVD is the next best thing. Put this DVD in your player and you will guarantee be a fan for life!
