Excellent compilation of her Modern/Crown years,
By Lee Watkins "From the Land of Pleasant Living" (Severna Park, Maryland USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: That's My Desire (Audio CD)
This CD collects 25 great tracks from Hadda's early years with Modern records (approx. 1945-52 and then again '56-57, signing briefly with London and then Okeh Records in between), including many instrumental and boogie-woogie tunes. Hadda started singing almost as an afterthought after her initial success as a fabulous boogie-woogie piano player (hard to believe she'd never even played boogie-woogie a week before writing and recording her first tunes at the behest of Modern Records cofounder Jules Bihari), but you'd never know that from these jazzy, sultry, smokey vocals. Hadda Brooks was a true treasure and, like Charles Brown and Jimmy Scott, one of the few to step back into the limelight several decades after her initial success to the delight of a whole new generation of fans.
