"That's Right" -- A Big Sax Section & Lots of Big Stars,
By Michael B. Richman (Portland, Maine USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: That's Right (Audio CD)
"That's Right" by Nat Adderley and the Big Sax Section is an enjoyable if not essential album. The best part of this solid 1960 session is the number of big name jazz stars that participate -- brother Cannonball, Yusef Lateef, Jimmy Heath, Charlie Rouse, Tate Houston, Wynton Kelly, Jim Hall, Les Spann, Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb! The music might be a bit formulaic for some, but "That's Right" is just about right for me.

Overwhelmingly underwhelming,
By Matthew Watters (Vietnam) - See all my reviews
This review is from: That's Right (Audio CD)
Nat Adderley had a great tone but was never really a very profound improvisor. More of a crowd-pleaser. And the very talented saxophone players on this session have few chances to shine, massed as they are in a Big Sax Section. Trapped somewhere between hard bop and big band jazz, it's as gimmicky as it sounds.
