5.0 out of 5 stars The World According to Edith Ann, July 24, 2011
This review is from: And That's the Truth (Audio CD)
I have loved this comedy album by the great Lily Tomlin for over 35 years. Lily recorded this live before an audience at the Ice House in Pasadena, California, performing as Edith Ann, the world-weary yet innocent five-and-a-half year old philosopher and "lady", a new unsuspecting resident in the neighborhood whom she hounds. This album is two long, richly comic monologues, on one Edith Ann walks the stranger home from work as she looks for her missing dog, Buster; the other one is when Edith shows up uninvited at the woman's house apparently the next day. The comedy has not lost a bit of it's tang after 40 years even with the occasional reference to something topical (ie: peace demonstrations) but most of the topics here never change for new generations of children, whether it's the joy of playing in the box a refrigerator comes in, sibling rivalry, or making crafts with your momma's picture and a box of Quaker Oats. We learn a lot about Edith Ann's never seen or heard family from her laid-off, liquour-loving father ("every Christmas we get a new ashtray from Parr's bar. Mama says 'Isn't it pretty? And it only costs $2,000. It's plastic and it says Parr's bar"), her long-suffering Tupperware hostess-mother, bullying old sister and brother, and the new baby of the house. And of course, Edith Ann who shares her knowledge on homemade lipstick, mysteriously dirty baby booties, and x-rated movies ("in X-rated movies, they kiss with no clothes on".)

I hope this wonderful comedy album will one day get a US CD release; it's been my favorite comedy record for nearly forty years - and most certainly, that is the truth!!
