Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

5.0 out of 5 stars That's The Way It Is - Special Edition, December 14, 2000
By
Mark Littlejohn (Winter Haven, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: That's the Way It Is: Special Edition (Audio CD)
This is the very best compilation from RCA/BMG ever! I am a serious Elvis collector with over 60 live shows from 1969 to 1976, and I can honestly say this is the cream of the crop. Elvis was the #1 concert attraction in the US from 1969 to 1976, and that title was earned by performances like those in this set.

I bought the jewel box version (I didn't like the looks of the digipak) and while some complain about the packaging, what counts is on the inside. We get the original albumn with bonus tracks on CD-1; the complete midnight show of Aug. 12, 1970 on CD-2; and additional live and rehearsal takes on CD-3. Highlights include the following: (CD-1) I Just Can't Help Believing, Just Pretend, Stranger In The Crowd,& Something. (CD-2) A killer opening of That's All Right & Mystery Train/Tiger Man, Just Pretend, Words, You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Polk Salad Annie, Little Sister/Getback & Love Me (both feature Elvis on electric guitar), Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Suspicious Minds. (CD-3) Can't Stop Loving You, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, Stranger In The Crowd, Make The World Go Away, Don't Cry Daddy/In The Ghetto, and Johnny B. Goode.

Many people have said that these songs are just the sames ones over and over, so no big deal. While some of the songs have appeared in the Elvis In Person or On Stage albumns, the sound quality is not the same, nor are the performances. Elvis' voice is way up front in the mix on this set and the backing vocals and instruments are superb. Of the 60 shows I have (50 of them are soundboard recordings) this is by far my favorite! In fact I made my own 80 minute CD-R of the best live tracks and have played it on a regular basis since this set came out in July. This set will go a long way towards educating music fans about Elvis in the 70's. Even as late as 1975 Elvis was still giving outstanding concerts across America, and I was fortunate enough to see him in Tampa, FL in April of that year.

If you are not an Elvis fan but would like to try some of his music, buy the Artist of the Cenutry collection and this Special Edition of That's The Way It Is. The rest of us who are fans will happily add this jewel to our collections. FYI: FTD (a division of BMG) is releasing the Aug. 10, 1970 opening night show this month, and hopefully BMG will include a complete show in the Las Vegas box set next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Elvis Landmark, July 18, 2000
By
Scott T. Rivers (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
RCA has truly delivered the goods with this stunning three-CD edition of Elvis Presley's "That's the Way It Is." Along with the original album, the box set includes a complete and previously unreleased concert from August 1970 that captures Elvis at his peak - a revelatory performance that justifies the purchase. More previously unissued material can be found on Disc Three, which showcases a fascinating rehearsal with Elvis and his musicians as they run through everything from "Cottonfields" to the "Peter Gunn Theme." For Presley fans and popular-music historians, the revamped "That's the Way It Is" emerges as a landmark (and long overdue) addition to the Elvis discography.
