5.0 out of 5 stars An American's view, May 31, 2005

This review is from: Now That's What I Call Music 1985 (Audio CD)
This is a great way to hear the songs you grew up woth, and be introduced to new songs at the same time.

This is a fun CD to pull out at a party or a class reunion.

Also just because a song didn't make the Top 40 here in America doesn't mean it's a bad song.

4.0 out of 5 stars TUNEFUL REMINDERS OF A GREAT YEAR IN MUSIC, September 5, 2003
This review is from: Now That's What I Call Music 1985 (Audio CD)
These ageless songs represent many styles including rock, pop, dance, folk, reggae and soul. My favorites include Kirsty MacColl's poignant protest song A New England, Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill, Talking Head's Road To Nowhere, DeBarge's infuriatingly catchy Rhythm Of The Night and Stephen Duffy's (later of The Lilac Time) catchy Kiss Me. There's also the interesting vocal work of Fine Young Cannibals with Johnny Come Home, the great rock sound of U2 with Unforgettable Fire, and Paul Hardcastle's eerie dance track Nineteen with its atmospheric production and simple but effective lyrics, Brian Ferry's smooth Slave To Love and Elton John's yearning Nikita. The club and soul genres are represented by The Commodores (Nightshift), Kool And The Gang (Cherish) and Ashford and Simpson with Solid, while there's real rock aplenty in the shape of Queen, Huey Lewis & The News, Tina Turner and U2. There's enough here of every musical style to please the listener; this album represents some of the most melodic and memorable songs of a great year and a very fruitful era in popular music.
