This book amazed me! FINALLY, a book that incorporates and integrates the ancient path of Buddhism with the 12 Steps - and manages to do so in a clear, concise, & easy-to-read manner. A book which gives hope that you can and will be free from suffering-forever! The author is very familiar with both 12 Steps Programs and with Buddhism-what a winning combo! "Keep it Simple" works, and this author did just that. This book is indeed heads above all of the other 12 step/Buddhism books out there - and I have read or looked through all of them! Two bored me to tears - I couldn't even get through the whole book, one was overly-simplistic, one was too long and too complicated. Well- try this book! It is perfect for you - if you are tired of the traditional religious views about "God" - and the same old traditional paternalistic "religious" views and mandates about how recovery from addictons 'must' be acomplished. This book really helped me: after 4 years of trying to "work the Steps", and never making it past Step 3, I am now happily and eagerly plowing through this book and the Steps. Buddha is indeed the best Sponsor! (But... do have a human sponsor also: Buddha recommends having Dharma Brothers and Sisters-in Recovery!)
~May all beings free from suffering and the causes of suffering~
(In this case, our "sufferings" = our addictions, and this book leads you straight into a recovery that is lasting!)

Dorena Rode is a highly intelligent woman with a troubled childhood. Because of this she dove deep into several of the twelve step programs over many years. In this book she has done a brilliant job of combining her in depth studies in Buddhism with her extensive experience in twelve step programs. Dorena enlightens the steps with a fresh Buddhist approach using colorful examples from ancient texts and teachings. She elaborates on some very complex concepts in a way that is easy to follow and understand. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to broaden there understanding of the twelve step program or who needs to take a fresh look at the twelve steps or anyone who is simply looking for a different perspective on the twelve steps.

What an awesome book---I couldn't wait to finish reading it so I could begin again and study it (which I am doing now!)! This book is great for experienced members or newcomers to the recovery program. A true tool of enhancement to one's personal growth if you are of non-faith, of enlightened faith and even of Christian faith. Tools are provided to enable one to find his or her way, and presented in such a kind, practical, informal, educational format. The author uses real life examples from her own experiences and presents herself as a fellow traveler--not one who "knows it all." It really helps to keep an open mind, to not take oneself so seriously when reading this material and to not trip over words---Christians, non-Christians...it's all good!

Easy read, well written, and very informative. The author combines personal experience with a thorough knowledge of both Buddhism and the 12 Steps to present a very useful guide to recovery.
