Editorial Reviews

Review

"It took me 15 minutes to page through Fall's book and read the synopsis of Proust's masterwork. I was tickled at how much info the author was able to slip into his breezy descriptions.... I've read Proust a couple of times, and this may not be quite so crystalline for the newcomer. But the author's comments and gotcha!s do help to point out who and what you should be looking for when you go on to read the entire oeuvre, which you will want to do when you finish this little book." (Mary Ronan Drew on Goodreads)

From the Author

All hail the digital age! A physical book can be revised only rarely, and I last did that two years ago, to correct a few errors in my paperback introduction to Marcel Proust's great novel. Now Yale University Press has launched a new In Search of Lost Time to challenge the standard version from Modern Library and the more venturesome translations from Penguin/Viking. I have updated my Kindle edition to incorporate the new Swann's Way, edited and annotated by William Carter, and I will continue to update it as Yale releases further volumes. If you buy the paperback 14-Minute Marcel Proust, or if you bought it from Amazon in the past, you can download the e-book without cost through Amazon's Matchbook program.

It took me 15 minutes to page through Fall's book and read the synopsis of Proust's masterwork. I was tickled at how much info the author was able to slip into his breezy descriptions of the volumes. Keeping in mind that like Pamela, you don't read Proust for the plot, still, this is as easy and informative an introduction to A la recherche I can imagine. Except for the comic books. Those comic books are astonishingly helpful.

I've read Proust a couple of times, and this may not be quite so crystalline for the newcomer. But the author's comments and gotcha!s do help to point out who and what you should be looking for when you go on to read the entire oeuvre, which you will want to do when you finish this little book.

What a pathetic performance! Stephen Fall thinks he's clever by catching a few minor errors and typos in Proust's text, but he ought to have done a far better job himself. A couple of examples: on the same page Verdurin becomes Verurdin. Then this: "Les duex mourront chacon de son côté" with two typos in French. And then Agostinelli becomes Agnostinelli and Agosintelli, all on the same page. I had expected a clear and succinct condensation of each of the seven sections, but instead was given bits and pieces of the author's own "connections" with Proust. Who cares that Fall did a hitch at the very barracks where Proust had been stationed?

The title itself is an oxymoron, like the title world's smallest giant. But what should I have expected? Mea culpa.
