From the Inside Flap

Relaxation exercises are great for reducing stress and getting you through those difficult days feeling more energized and less frazzled. What you may not know is that stress reduction is as important in maintaining and repairing the health of your heart as proper diet, smoking cessation, and lowering your cholesterol. In fact, the right kind of stress reduction can help you prevent and even cure heart disease.

In The 15-Minute Heart Cure, cardiologist John M. Kennedy shows you how stress triggers a fight-or-flight response that can harm your cardiovascular system in a variety of ways. Then he helps you safeguard your heart health with powerful, easy-to-learn techniques for dispelling stress naturally, without spending a lot of time or money.

Dr. Kennedy explains the stress/heart-disease connection for the four major types of heart disease and shows you how to stop stress in its tracks with his proven B-R-E-A-T-H-E (Begin, Relax, Envision, Apply, Treat, Heal, End) technique. Whether you have had a heart attack, have been diagnosed with a heart condition, or simply want to keep your heart in great shape, this unique, practical guide gives you the tools you need to make every day less stressful and mitigate the impact of each stressful situation on your heart.

You'll learn how to:

  • Use guided imagery and breathing tech-niques to induce a relaxation response

  • Train yourself to find calm even in the most stressful situations

  • Apply variations of the B-R-E-A-T-H-E technique to specific cardiovascular conditions

  • Prevent heart attack, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and valve disease

  • Reduce and reverse the effects of an existing heart condition

  • Avoid dangerous and costly heart surgery by maintaining your heart health every day

Complete with numerous real-life examples of stress-induced cardiovascular events and how these patients repaired their hearts through stress reduction, The 15-Minute Heart Cure is the book that could save your life.

"As an invasive cardiologist, Dr. Kennedy is skilled at restoring flow to our hearts. In The 15-Minute Heart Cure, he shows how flow in our heart is like flow in our lives, and his simple relaxation tool helps us to achieve this goal. If you, a friend, or a loved one has heart disease, flow with it. This is an outstanding book with helpful, practical exercises. I highly recommend it."
—Dean Ornish, M.D.

"This is an incredible book with tools that are far reaching. Dr. Kennedy successfully distills proven data from sports psychology in order to create his B-R-E-A-T-H-E technique. In addition to healing hearts, the vital information in this book will inspire companies to innovate, students to excel in academics, and athletes to perform at their highest level." —Robert Kriegel, Ph.D., bestselling author of If It Ain't Broke . . . Break It!

"The 15-Minute Heart Cure is an outstanding review of a timely and important subject, stress and heart disease. Dr. Kennedy provides a much-needed stress-relieving tool that will help heal many hearts."—Ralph Brindis, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I., President-elect, American College of Cardiology

In The 15-Minute Heart Cure, Dr. Kennedy explains how stress triggers a fight-orflight response that can harm your cardiovascular system. He arms you with powerful guided vision and breathing techniques that help you stop stress in its tracks and keep your heart pumping as it should through every challenging situation. Dr. Kennedy also provides tools to protect your heart from common stressful triggers including difficult commutes and traffic, caring for a sick loved one, or preparing for elective surgery. This very practical guide helps you feel great, perform better under stress, and save your life, all at the same time.

More About the Author

John Martin Kennedy, MD, FACC

Dr. John M. Kennedy is a recognized expert in the field of invasive cardiology and a much sought after authority on complimentary medical approaches. He has successfully helped thousands of patients with his pioneering to preventive cardiology since beginning his practice 20 years ago. Board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, board member of the American Heart Association and a clinical associate professor of cardiology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Kennedy is a dedicated healer who approaches the business of 'health' with compassion, intention, and commitment. He believes that the seeds needed to reverse and ultimately prevent heart disease reside in all of us, but must be cultivated and nurtured with mindful, dedicated time and attention. Dr. Kennedy's approach to heart health is consultative and instructive, not prescriptive. He would much prefer that you change your diet and learn to manage your stress than put in a stent or perform cardiac catheterization. And while he believes you can transcend cardiovascular disease with lifestyle modification, there is no "magic formula (bullet)" that works for everyone. The results are proportional to the work and mindfulness to a person's efforts. His deeply rooted belief that everyone has an inner potential for greater heart health is the foundation on which he now bases his practice of preventive cardiology and wellness.

Dr. Kennedy is a Director of Preventive Cardiology and Wellness at Marina Del Rey Hospital. His program specializes in rehabilitation, early detection and the treatment of cardiac problems, with an emphasis on prevention. Based on a large body of literature showing how stress adversely impacts heart health, as well as his own cutting edge research on post-stroke patients, Dr. Kennedy created the BREATHE™ technique to stop stress in its tracks. By combining two time-honored forms of relaxation - guided imagery and breath work - Dr. Kennedy has created a new paradigm in stress management, which an ABC News investigative story concluded, "could reduce high blood pressure in as little as two weeks."

Along with his work in the field of preventive cardiology, Dr. Kennedy is an integral part of the team at LA Bariatrics. Dr. Kennedy encourages patients to adopt and maintain new, healthier lifestyle habits so they not only lose weight but also, more importantly, keep it off.

The media and health industry luminaries frequently turn to Dr. Kennedy as a resource for information on preventive cardiology and wellness. Dr. Kennedy has appeared on the internationally syndicated CBS show The Doctors and has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show, World News with Diane Sawyer, Anderson, Katie and PBS. He has appeared in print media in First for Women, The Advocate, Health Magazine, Real Simple Magazine, The Guardian and online in MSN's Today Health, Everyday Health. In his quest to bring knowledge to the public, he hosts MD-VOD, a live show that provides simple answers to common medical questions and problems. He also lectures throughout the United States and holds regular seminars on cardiovascular disease, stress management, healthy nutrition and dieting, proper breathing, and more. Recognizing the growing prevalence of heart disease among children, Dr. Kennedy also has made it his personal crusade to educate children about the importance of diet, exercise and stress management in his popular talk entitled, Big Mind, Brave Heart, Bright Future.

Dr. Kennedy's first book for popular audiences, The 15 Minute Heart Cure: The Natural Way to Release Stress and Heal Your Heart in Just Minutes a Day, was a critically-acclaimed national bestseller, which Ralph Brindis, M.D., President, American College of Cardiology, called "an outstanding review of a timely and important subject, stress and heart disease." For more information about Dr. Kennedy's publishing, please see our Press & Publications section.

Prior to his appointment as director of preventative cardiology and wellness at Marina Del Rey Hospital, Dr. Kennedy was director of the cardiac catheterization lab at Kaiser Permanente in San Rafael California, where he created the Heart Alert Program--the gold standard nationwide for rapidly and effectively treating heart attack patients. Dr. Kennedy also was the co-director of the cardiac CT angiography program at Kaiser Permanente. His cutting edge research in the fields of cardiac calcification and cardiac imaging has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Year after year, Dr. Kennedy finds his name included in Castle Connolly's list of the nation's top cardiologists. Dr. Kennedy received his medical degree from the Dartmouth-Brown Program in Medicine and his B.S. from the University of California-Santa Barbara, from which he graduated summa cum laude. He holds membership in several professional medical organizations, including The American College of Cardiology. His numerous awards and honors include election to the prestigious Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. Dr. Kennedy currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

"Dr Kennedy's presentation, Managing Stress in the Workplace--A Cardiologist's Perspective, is timely and important. As a cardiologist he speaks from his heart and helps us understand the importance of being mindful and conscious of the heart-brain connection. His message is simple and essential for managing stress in the workplace as well as in our everyday lives."
Dean Ornish, M.D.
author, The Spectrum and Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease

Dr Kennedy hits this one head on. Finally a MD who understands that stress is the main cause and risk factors such as genetics, elevated blood pressure and elevated cholesterol are just that, risk factors. He guides you through an easy way to deal with stress and eliminate heart disease from your system. I've been a RN for 25 years specializing in cardiac care. Many patients that have heart disease are just treating symptoms with medication and procedures but not dealing with the underlying stresses in their lives that cause the disease in the first place. I highly recommend this book!!!

There are hundreds of books on Amazon about heart disease as well as stress reduction and the relaxation response. Some, like Dean Ornish's, are quite comprehensive and integrative in their approach to the problem. Others are overly narrow, stressing just one of the usual three legs of the tripod of diet, exercise, and stress. Then there are books that zoom in on one narrow aspect of their already narrow approach (the 2 currently most popular books concentrate on diet, though Esselstyne's "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" emphasizes abstinence from all fats, dairy, even fish and flax while Sinatra's "Reverse Heart Disease Now"-- with its advocation of CoQ10 and numerous non-prescription vitamins--comes close to making a pill junkie out of the afflicted).

It's a little like the old Indian tale of the blind men who are asked to determine the precise nature of an elephant by feeling it--each coming to a valid but necessarily limited and partial conclusion. Jennings and Kennedy's book acknowledges all three legs of the tripod but emphasizes stress reduction through exercise, relaxation, guided imagery and a simple breathing technique. To readers familiar with Herbert Benson's relaxation response and the numerous books it has spawned, this will be familiar ground. No doubt even readers without a representative collection of heart books are likely to "speed read" all of the statistics and anecdotal examples that the authors have collected in order to substantiate the claim that their approach is proven and useful and to "justify" a book devoted to a few basic techniques--a 15-minute cure--that may already be common wisdom to many readers.

This is an amazing book by Dr. John M.Kennedy! The BREATHE technique outlined by DR. Kennedy is simple yet life changing. I just started using the BREATHE technique after reading the book and have found it to be an incredibly simple, easy way to reduce stress on my heart and regain balance in my life. We all live in stressful times yet this simple process has allowed me to calm down an I truly appreciate this book and will use this for the rest of my life. I think this book will be a huge success since it applies to all of us who live with stress on a daily basis!

I found this book to be disappointing. I read it, tried the exercises, and found myself frustrated because I really wanted to feel de-stressed...but wasn't. The book is replete with anecdotes about the author's interactions with various patients, and I felt that most of it was redundant. The main B-R-E-A-T-H-E exercise may be valuable to some and could have been taught in one simple chapter without the rest of the chatter.

I never doubted that meditation is a healthy practice, but I didn't realize how it can actually help prevent and even cure an ailing heart. Dr. Kennedy has written an entertaining, encouraging, easy-to-read book on how to stay alive in this stressful world. He backs up his statements with reference to important research studies and to his own experiences during his many years of practice. I am a library director and will highly recommend this book to my patrons. In fact, I may even offer a few free public programs teaching folks Dr. Kennedy's methods of relaxation.
